So took the dash out of my puma today ... and found the attached with no obvious source. Driver and passenger side both have this rust only on the bracket for attaching the dash, everything else looks fine with no trace of water. So wondering if this is ingress or something else like condensation and this bit is more susceptible? It's kind of a natural trap given the shape.
First time I've had a look behind here since new (MY13) so maybe I'm just being paranoid now... or have been negligent for the last 10 years! I can give them a clean up and a coat of lanolin spray but would rather fix or at least know what is causing it.

The sons Defender had that sort of rust/corrosion in all sorts of places, particularly when it sat around, not being used, before it was sold.
Poorly painted originally no doubt.
Just clean it up,like you said, use lanolin or i generally use Tectyl.
Then it will be fine for another decade or so.

I'd check the seal under the windscreen frame. It is prone to perishing and becoming porous. It can let plenty of water in. I've used Xtroll bit by bit to soak in and seal it up, but I probably need to apply a black silicone sealer to it, as I don't want to disassemble and replace it.
