This is a very interesting read for anyone who has a V8 version of this model. It is from Defender2.

I think using "broken" is just clickbait...
arent these things updated over the 'net now?

Not sure if the V8 was overfilled with oil from the factory or a faulty oil sensor or a software update was the problem, but seems to be fixed. The 1st one he had seemed to be a lemon as they took it back.

I just put that up to show how a simple issue could affect the car. Probably down to poor quality control at the filling of the oil or a sensor. Just thought the simple fix might be of benefit to someone. A dip stick would be useful but if you checked the oil level using the dipstick and the car kept telling you to add oil, you probably would not drive it anyway.

Also completely ignoring how to actually check oil level, not just simply chucking some in and hoping for the best.

How do you check the level?
If the computer says it's low and put in a litre, and there's no dipstick, what else do you do?
Serious question.

Engine at operating temp, switch engine off and wait a minute or three for oil level to stabilize, then ignition on (engine stays off) and read off the display. No point pouring in some oil and expecting an instant level change.
My D4 had no dipstick, was a good thing. In 230000km never misread or over/underfilled it. It's a matter of understanding the system.

In the linked article, what do you think has gone wrong? User error?
My reading, it sounds like the car mistakenly said add oil, then it ended up over filled.
Are there different sensors telling you to add oil and oil level?

He said it was a software fault. Resolved after a software update and draining and refilling with the correct level.
The only way to resolve of the sensor is misbehaving would be to drain and refill with the specified volume if the system is playing up.

Looks like sensor got confused with a software glitch. But imho also parly user error perhaps in not checking oil correctly. I've had false readings before, just need to wait a bit longer and cycle the ignition - seemed to fix it. Now back to old skool dipstick, which is still a guess, and you still have to wait for oil to drain to sump with engine at operating temperature.
