View Full Version : Welding Exhaust?

I’ve managed to break my exhaust pipe at a join between the big round thing in the middle of the car and one of the rear mufflers - more or less where it passes the rear wheel.

Doesn’t look overly damaged, just the weld has failed. A result of limping on **** roads towing with a failed air spring…

Are these things able to be welded back together? If so, are there any specific D4 precautions to take before dropping it off at a mechanic? (Electronics to disable etc?)

Any exhaust shop can stitch it back together...

Std precautions on welding a car apply - take the cover off the battery so they clip to the right one!

Thanks mate - I might just remove the aux battery altogether, as currently hard wired to the starter, bypassing the traxide.

I just have visions of someone shorting out every circuit board in the car!

Not urgent - all held together with gorilla tape and cable ties at the moment :-)

I’ve had several bits either customised or repaired at Mettams Mufflers in Morley. They did a great job with the D3 and repaired a broken and “paper thin” section on my old Volvo when a roo tore the down pipe apart. The guy was a magician.

Thanks Brad - I was planning on going there actually, albeit the Midland outlet. Happy to make a day of it in Morley :)

Mine broke there years ago. No reason. Just seen it dangling one day

Get them to remove and "forget" to put that "big round thing" back in, engine will breathe and sound a whole lot better. Mate did his D4 sdv6, was great, I was going to do mine but I sold it before that job came around.

I'm sure the Midland mob are just as competent. I was just happy to find a friendly mob with a "can do" attitude that actually did what they said they were going to, in the time they estimated and at the cost they estimated.
