View Full Version : V6, V8 or TD6?

My apologies if this thread has been done to death. I have decided to bite the bullet and get a new Discovery 3. I'll state that the great majority of its life will be driving in the 'burbs, with the occasional holiday run and I'm a mad fisherman so there will be a annual camping trip somehwere relatively remote but for the most part just battling the city traffic. Can't see any adventures across the Simpson or anything likt that in the near future. Is the V6 the logical choice for me? I have nothing against a diesel, in fact would be happy to get one, but not sure if I need one. Or should I look at the V8? Again sorry if this has been discussed before but only discovered this great forum recently.
Many thanks,
Dermie

It depends on your driving style and what gets your 'juices' flowing. All three engines will do the job, obviously the V6 will be cheaper but will probably be worthless within 3 years. Not that Land Rover's retain their value but it will be an easier sell for a V8 or TDV6.
For sheer driving pleasure I'd go for the V8. Haven't driven one but from all accounts they are awesome machines. I'm not sure how thirsty they are but considering fuel prices it will be the most expensive option to run.
I think the diesel is the best. I've spent around 2000km's in a TDV6, it's got more than enough grunt and drives like a petrol V6 (170kph at just over 3000rpm). I also towed a 10m 3.5T trailer and it still wanted to go! Suprisingly it delivered excellent fuel economy when I gave it the boot and while towing.
Like any diesel, they will retain resale value and would be the choice if you ever do any 4WD'ing or long trips.

I agree,
I have an HSE TDV6 and it is brilliant. It drives like a petrol, has no "surges" through the gear range with the turbo and is very quiet. It will have the best re sale value in time and I wouldn't be surprised if the 6 cylinder petrol gets the chop. They are harder to sell, hence the deals on them at the moment.
The V8 would be better suited to open road travel (likewise I guess the diesel is too). Mine is used for country driving.

TDV6 is way to go. They are so effortless to drive in the suburbs or on the open country road.
Economy is pretty good if you drive it carefully (i.e. not race off at the light all the time).
I reckon the resale value will be better on the diesel over any petrol these days. Also the TDV6 is cheaper than the V8 which is a real winner. Toyota do the opposite and make the diesel more expensive.
I wouldn't ever think of the V6 petrol if you can afford a V8 or TDV6 because they are relatively old technology.

Thanks guys. What makes the TD6 so good? Especially if I'll be driving mainly around town as I said? I'm sure they're great on the open road or if towing something etc but will I be happy with it around town?

TDV6, good power, great torque, excellent economy and more range.
Smooth and great around town. I wouldn't think of getting a V8 (and I drove them all my life).

Dont go on this belief that the V6 petrol is more economical than the V8. Check the labels and you will find that the V8 has lower emissions outputs and uses less litres per 100kms than the V6. Check the labels next time you are at a dealership

Take a Diesel for a test drive. I reckon you'll like it! Nicest diesel I have ever driven.

I have the V8, sounds great, goes great, excellent grunt on and off road:D . If fuel isnt an issue then I'd go the V8 not that there isnt anything wrong the other 2 either, I dont think anyone could say in terms of offroad whether one performed better than the other, on road the V8 is king

I would want the TDV6. It would depend on the price diferences though. I havn't checked as I know I can't have one.

George is right, it is the price difference that is where the competition between the 3 engines gets a lot closer. You will be driving a LOT of kms in your V8 or V6 before you pay for the economy of the diesel.
Petrol/diesel economically there is very little in it so you ask yourself what do you prefer easier river crossings/ better engine breaking/crawling torque/fuel availabliity in the outback - or sheer joyous driving grunt round town? There is no shame in saying you dig the latter and no one is saying you sacrifice a lot of off road ability. Me I like diesels, have done the V8 thing and I'm over it.

Low end torque 440NM @ 1900RPM. You don't need to rev the engine very hard to accelerate from rest to a legal pace around town.
Because the diesel engine doesn't have a big rev range it isn't the best for passing at highway speed unlike a petrol engine but if your towing it will pull a decent load up a hill without too much effort.
You got to test both engines back to back to see what suits your needs.

I do a mixture of city and country driving in my TDV6. Performs very well around town. I'm hoping re-sale down the track will be better with the TDV6 as well. Like everyone here says, just drive it.

Having worked for Land Rover in Brisbane and driven all three engines many times. I can say there is only one engine for the Disco 3. And that is TDV6
Reasons.
V6 under powered and same feul econmy as the V8 but alot less power. Why would you, ok it is cheaper but resale value will be really crap. And biggest no is it is a Ford lump
V8 better oiption than the V6 but does noit feel that much faster than the TDV6 , (they are both very close to power). Ok coorse same as the V6 uses too much fuel. Also as with the V6 the resale price will hit the floor and keep going as the feul price goers up (which it will, lets face it , its not going down again) Remeber i am a pom who has had this high fuel price for years (we are about $2.80 a ltr over there) so big engined petrol cars also lose money on reslae compaired to diesel ones. Just look at how much a Rangie is second hand in the Uk. You can pick them up for peanuts. Oh and also the V8's have a problem on the Disco's when you fill the tank right up. The go mental in the electronics. (oh but you did not hear that from me.)
The TDV6 is the best , it is Diesel so it will be easy to live with . It is a pug Engine, and they make the best Diesel engines in the world. The power will surprise you and you will not want a petrol again after owning a TDV6.
But they will be the most sort after Disco for resale and you will not be able to get one for love or money in caouple of years . Which is good for you if you want to sell it

Interesting to see in this weeks metropolotin newspaers (NSW) that once again there are discounts on V8 petrols, V6 petrols but not on the diesel motor. Does that tell the story regarding resale value?

Someone give drivesafe a poke !
He bought a petrol V6 would be good to hear his (or rather his wife's) experience with same.

Thanks for all the info guys. Seems the consensus is the TD6, but I'll go and drive both the diesel and the V6 back to back and see what I think. Might even take the V8 for a spin as well, just for fun! Thanks again.

At the end of the day that is the best option, decide what you like. I have a D2 V8 and love it but then I love the sound of a V8

The V6 is a Ford Explorer motor. it was never designed to pull a 2.7ton vehicle.

The latest Rangie is coming out with a TDV8 and is the most torqueist land rover motor ever. Now that must pull like a steam train!!!!! So says the latest Land Rover Owners International. It reallly p!sses me off that my V8 p38 will be beaten from the lights by an oiler. Bugger.

As long as you source your parts from the USA and not Ford Australia. Top and bottom radiator hose from usa $53Aust, Ford Australia $157 !!!!
And can't fix they own products
