View Full Version : Inlet manifolds different on 2.7 and 3.0?

Gday All,
Looking at the manifolds they are physically the same but the 2.7 has what looks like a butterfly arrangement in 1 set of the inlet tubes and the 3.0 doesnt.. the closest i can come to working out what they are is VW refers to them as a swirl flap or something similar to that..
Im curious as i need to replace both my manifolds and i bought a 2nd hand set of heads and they came with inlet manifolds but 1 is from the 3.0l engine.. im wondering if i can use it on the 2.7 or if i will just start throwing codes..
A quick search on the net only shows the 3.0l manifolds for sale..
Thoughts ??

What is wrong with the original ones ? , Stick to the 2.7 ones as the 3.0 are prone to failure.

Both mine got damaged and the heads i bought have a 2.7 manifold and as i just found out a 3.0 manifold.. a search locally sees not much luck getting a passenger side 2.7 manifold.
The 2 manifolds are size wise the same only difference is the 2.7 has some sort of butterfly set up inside 1 row of ports controlled by what looks like a breather at the rear of the manifold closest to the HPFP whereas the 3.0 doesnt have this set up..

Cheers BulletmanThe butterflies were used in Jag fitment,I thought about removing them during my rebuild. I know someone that may have a spare manifold.

Dumb question : if they are the same size, but the 3.0 one cracks, why not fit the 2.7 part to 3.0 motors?

Judging by how easily my 2.7 ones cracked the 3.0 ones must be thinner than paper...
The amount of gunk build up on the butterflies i doubt theyve worked properly for years ..

They don't work on a disco but yes mine were at least 50% blocked with sludge, will send you a pm in regards to a manifold.

The early 3.0's crack because the engines have the second turbo generating more boost than the 2.7's single turbo.

I keep forgetting to test when I have access to one.

the 2.7 manifolds have as mentioned the butterflies and at the back the whole plastic vacuum assembly etc which on a 3.0 is where the injectors pipes run.
