Getting our Discovery 2 back on the road ...

Hi all,

We have 1999 Discovery 2 , V8 that we have owned now for 18 years and it has only 130 000 km.

It was my wife's car and it was really a mum's taxi.. Kids got dropped off to school and back and it did few long trips interstate.

It was her daily for all that time and she really really loves this car.

We have many others cars , including couple of muscle cars and a Jaguar S type but whenever she talks about it she gets excited the most..

Kids grew up in it and when you get attached to it, it's really hard to sell it. I am glad we didn't..

In 2020, she decided to upgrade to a new car,a black Discovery 3 so instead of selling the old girl , we've decided to park the old girl until

she gets to 25 years so we can put her on historic club plates.

I've always been a Nissan Patrol, Ford and Pajero type of a guy and never got into English cars but after owning it for such a long time I really see why people

love these things so much .. including my wife haha

They really aged well and you just don't see them in this condition on the road anymore.

The v8 sound is much better then any new cars today , they will never build cars like this again so we will just keep it.

The time has come to fix all the little things here and there and put her on the club plates, next year, and susprise the wife when it's done.

Hence I am on this forum and will need help from you guys ..

At the moment, I've ordered all the new parts to completely replace the cooling system and roof lining is out to be done next week.

Looks good. Unfortunately, my D2 looks very sad in comparison, but it has done very close to 1/2 million km and had a hard life, but now it has come the time to move on and I now want something I don't need to spend as much time working on. That said, my son just bought a 1998 300TDI D1, so he is now asking me for help, but at least he can do the crawling underneath, not me. I have had 31 years of Discovery ownership 2 x V8, then a TDI, then a TD5

Besides the 3 amigos, head gasket and couple of leaks this car has been very reliable so half a million km
is possible, if you look after them.

I would stick to v8's, I think less issues overall.

Dunno about that. TD5s are pretty good.

ok so I finally got into fixing the mechanical issues.

The water pump bearing has completely gone, while running it a bit in the driveway it made a grinding Nosie and engine started shaking and water started ****ing under the pump.

I guess the bearing finally gave out..

took everything off and pump came out easily, not much rust in it and it looked like it might have been replaced when heads were done..

I am also replacing 2 pulleys as there is a bit of noise in them , might as well when I am there.

They said that about the Disco2 also - as the term "electrickery" seemed to have been coined. Yet here we are!

The new ones will still be around if the engines last.

True also I just started working on it and it's super easy, I remember back in 1999 they were sort of high tech, now you look at it and you have a good laugh compared to what the new ones are like.

[biggrin] Plenty of space in the engine bay and a still a proper 4wd.

hi all, roof lining has been done, new water pump and 2 new pulleys installed.

Every component of the cooling system is now new, just need to run it to make sure it doesn't leak.

Almost finished with servicing the auto, next is new engine oil, and all filters to be changed.

I must say missed this car, lovely sound from that small v8. :) moving forward.
