View Full Version : Srs warning light

Hello people,
I'm after suggestions for what could cause the srs light to be on, the nanocom reads no faults, even when the light is on, clear faults puts the light off, then it comes straight back on.
I've tried changing the clock spring, and the connections under the front seats both seem to be good, there is also a plug in the dash, passenger side, which I've checked as well, all seem good.
Both front seat belts get used regularly, so I don't think that's the issue, not quite sure what to check next.
All suggestions gratefully received

Hi, unplug a pretensioner then read code again, if you dont get open circuit for that one the DCU becomes very suspect cos once the light is on it should log a fault code too unless nanocom is misbehaving in this case cos it's not the best with the SRS, i've had something similar once and found a logged code with hawkeye while nanocom didnt show any especially that you said that there is no code logged but the light goes out when you clear that non-existent code

Just been through this... test continuity of the pretensioners to see if fault there, use electrical contact cleaner on connections, if SRS light staying on it is the DCU under the cubby box - replace. We thought we had our one sorted after wet river crossings and liberal spray of contact cleaner but came back a couple of days later - replaced the DCU under the cubby box and all good since.

Just to finish this one off, finally got time to change the srs ecu over yesterday, its under the cubby box between the front seats, not difficult but very fiddly, the srs warning light has gone and on the couple of short drives I've done so far it seems to be staying off, so hopefully that's the end of that.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions, this forum really is the best thing

Can you tell me where you bought the yellow box?

Can you tell me where you bought the yellow box?I looked on eBay first, a few about for 125-160, then got the one from the UK that was 36 dollars including postage, if you can wait a week they are almost giving them away over there. Just make sure your ebay setting allows you to buy from overseas

I get lots of stuff from OS. So it's second hand? I have no problem with that btw, the one in my car is 24 yo.

Unplug it and if you dont get open circuit that way then you should rule out the DCU but if you get the open circuit the problem is beyond that connector toward the bag

Thanks. SF. I already replaced the clock spring but stupidly didn't think to redo the test with it unplugged. Well. in my defence I did have the battery off....

Remember that in most cases the clock spring faults are "open circuit", i've never seen short circuit code which was caused by the clock spring as the tracks in it get interrupted not shorted, for a short circuit it should be exposed to some physical "intrusion" or water ingress iMO.

I did the clock spring before I decided I needed a nanocom again. But thanks for that. Makes sense.

OK. Unplugged. Nanocom now says driver's airbag open circuit. I'm a little nervous screwing around with the airbag itself. Heard enough loud bangs in my life.[bigsad]
Is there a safe way of testing this, or is it a new bag required. According to the Nano the bag is the original fitted to the car.

Of course, the clock spring I got could be as bad as the one originally in the car. I guess I'm safe testing the one I have sitting around!

Hmm... found an old thread on LandyZone which you, SF, contributed to. Still none the wiser except in that it seems likely that a SH rotary coupler is just as likely to be as bad as the one I already have, and doesn't help as to testing them....

To check the bag you need a resistor to connect instead of it dont mess with multimeter in the bag's plug... probably you need a new one
google out "airbag simulator resistor"

Thanks. I know about not putting a mm to the bag! BANG!

I changed the cluster today for one that's not cracked. synced the odo to the BCU. Noticed that the SRS light is not on. Now, I know the fault is still logged, so I guess someone has been into this cluster before me.... I have no intention of selling the car, and the guy said I could blank off the light.... but I still want to fix it. Eventually. Anyone know a good source of driver airbags??? There are a few in the UK, but of course they can't be posted...

I dont know how your rules are there but here the missing SRS warning on ignition self test is a MOT failure, check if it's not black tape on the LED cos otherwise the wire to it must get a positive feed to be extinguished...unless the PO was not so brutal to "kill" the LED

It's the same here. The bloke here will overlook it in my case.... But like I said I want to fix it. So I will probably swap the clear cover to get rid of the cracks and put my own cluster back. I'll follow up with the resistors though. The clock spring tests ok

This makes loud bangs.

I have used a Beethoven. The device itself makes no noise at all save a furious whirring noise when cranked. It was the forty or so holes with gelignite and nitropril that went BANG. Watch out for falling rocks!
