Deluxe series seats

Has anyone fitted deluxe seats to a S2A and would you do it

I am not sure what seats you are referring to.

Many different seats have been fitted to Series Landrover over the years.

First, what was fitted to them from the factory -

Series 1 had a variety of similar, but not identical seats in the early years, with the 80" having mostly the back fixed to the bulkhead and a rather thick seat cushion. The Tickford station wagon was different.

The 86/88/107/109 are all interchangeable, with a hinged back and a much thinner cushion with two wooden protrusions holding the back, and the front held by a leather strap. But early 107 pickups had a fixed bench seat.

Series 2/2a/3 are all interchangeable (but different from Series 1), with hinged backs and cushions held down at the rear by going under the back and at the front by a leather strap. Seat rails carry the hinges for the backs and restrain the cushions sideways. Centre seats are a little narrower than the left and right ones.

Series 3 introduced the option of an adjustable driver's seat, becoming standard on later 109s. Late Series 3 introduced the option of high seat backs, and these were standard with deluxe trim, and became standard on late 109s in Australia.

In addition to these factory seats some after market suppliers produce so-called deluxe seats that are cushions and backs that are the same as the factory ones except that they have a bit more elaborate upholstery. (The factory upholstery was mostly just plain, flat, foam covered with several types of vinyl. Deluxe trim got you cushions and backs with multiple vertical seams, but no real shaping of the foam.)

In addition to these seats many owners have in the past fitted just about any type of seat you can think of, But be aware that any such fitting today will require engineering approval in any Australian state and will reduce the value of what is rapidly becoming a historic vehicle.

What are you meaning by "deluxe seats"?

I should point out that my 2a has high back seats and deluxe cushions from a late Series 3. In my view, the high back seats are the biggest seating improvement you can make.

I fitted some to my Series III shorty years back.
Look great but the ones I got were made on MDF bases, I did pull one apart and seal the base but I haven't had any issues.
The cross bars under the seat base were strips of MDF which I replaced with hardwood, possibly overkill.

If you have good backs & bases for the IIa you could get them re-covered but that's not cheap.
I've made seat bases in exterior ply but the backs are pressed steel, foam can be cut to size.

Would I fit them to a IIa ? Why not....?
Easy to change back to standard seats plus the deluxe seats are a 'little' more comfortable and readily available.
Investigate shipping from the UK rather than buying local, freight costs have increased since I purchased mine but ordered with other parts it might be cheaper that way.

I did recover some Series III seats myself a while back, time consuming and you ideally need an industrial sewing machine.
I also made new bases as the old ones had collapsed.
Excuse the colour, I've since found another material supplier in Melbourne and can get a darker green.

yep, fitted them to my IIA SWB and they're nice. Mine had seat backs as bases and everything was stuffed so I needed to replace the whole thing anyway, got the britpart deluxe jobs because the price was good. Wouldn't say they're the greatest quality but they look good and are comfy to sit in.
