View Full Version : Where's my torque gone

Am I imagining it or is it possible my max torque is kicking in a lot later in the rev range ?
MY 2010 Defender cab chas. Motor is the 2.4 Ford and has done 185,000 km. It has not happened suddenly but I now feel it is very sluggish off the mark and certainly in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears it is very slow to pick up speed.
My local indy did a "re learn " on it recently but it did not seem to change. i also think it may now be running a bit lean as on a trip over last weekend to Bathurst it seemed to give slightly better fuel economy and the motor seemed to be running hotter even tho the temp gauge was in its normal position.
It seems that it is not getting into max torque range until around 1800 revs now whereas it was kicking in around 1300 previously. Am I dreaming ? or is there a simple explanation ? And remedy.

Could be as simple as the air filter needs changed. Nice if it was but I am sure you checked that.

Could be something like the variable vanes of the turbo not operating correctly.

Or a split boost hose. Although I guess the indie would have spotted that.

the 2.4 torque band comes in at 1600, hits max between 1900 to 2400 rpm and falls off a cliff after that. See values 1 and 2 for the 103kw version of the engine. i'm on my third turbo in 190,000 kms. granted i dusted the first one and the exhaust impeller **** itself on the second (not that long ago). When i dusted the turbo there was a lack of enthusiasm as you are experiencing. The impeller blades were chipped so it was easy to diagnose.
FWIW, diesels run hot when they over fuel. Petrols run hot when lean.

What engines do the rest of the numbers reference?
the duratorq engine came in 3 output specs. LR fitted the 140ps version to the Defender. the duratorq engine was used in a range of vehicles across Ford, LR, Peugeot and probably others. If you have ridden in a London Taxi built in the past 20 years, you have enjoyed the delights of a duratorq engine to get you from the hotel to the theatre.

Edit: got the pdf on the browser instead.
