This sounds like two or three pieces of sheet metal bouncing up and down against each other when going over bumps. This only heard with the windows open.
The springs and shocks are firm, so is the rear muffler. I am thinking that it could be the diff guard or the plates/dust covers inboard of the caliper
Any suggestions?

The radio's not loud enough. [wink11]
Sorry, apart from what you have mentioned, all you can do is get under and poke and prod around.
Possibly the towbar tongue rattling.

Apart from what you said; loose shroud on the shock(s). Loose baffle in said muffler. Loose wheelnuts ( don't laugh ), loose calliper bolts, test it with light brake pressure. Number plate falling off[bigsmile1]

Brake dust shield or shields ?

They sound like that when cracked, then eventually fall off[bighmmm]

Or if the front is sagged you could be hitting a lose bump stop.

Id bet it is the brake shields also. I'm really surprised they haven't already fallen off.

I wish I could say the same. I reckon mine fell off 15-20 years ago! Probably what I was doing with it didn't help. :no2:

You need to to more driving on rough roads and over corrugations.[biggrin]

I replaced quite a few over the years when we had D2s.

The rear diff guard is loose. One of the mounting bolts is missing. An easy fix.
I put the car in extended height mode that and the 50mm lift give plenty of access.

Good result. Curious, did you check the brake guards?

I checked the one that was there. One was missing. I am on the look out for a replacement.
