View Full Version : 6 speed auto vs 8 for reliability?

There's plenty of threads about the difference between the 6 and 8 speed auto transmissions in the D4, but I've not found anything about if either has proven to be more reliable or longer lasting in service over the other - any thoughts or comments please?

I’ve not heard of an 8 speed failing or being rebuilt so I think that says something. It should be noted that the 6HP28 attached to the 3L also seems more reliable than the 6HP26 attached to 2.7L which often suffer torque converter issues.
Expect to have to replace or repair the selector knob on the 8 speed - something the other avoid with a simple gear selector.

Haven’t heard of any reliability differences between these ZF transmissions.
Ignore the Landrover “sealed for life” on both…change oil at 50-70k..and you’re all good.
The electronic gear selector (only on the 8 speed) has some reports of issues after time…but not nearly enough to worry about.
The 8 speed drives so much better imho.

The 8 speed seems to be a much better box than the 6 speed, but regular oil changes certainly helps them out

Indy changed the oil in my 8 speed at 80K and I did the transfer case with very very expensive LR oil. Cars now done 138K and I'll change the oil again plus the diffs before it goes to a new home.... I'm a clean oil nut in everything from way back. :)

PS. The Cook wants me to keep the D and flog the new Prado ..... :O Pity she didn't say that before I went and ordered the Prado in a fit of old age madness. :)

I’m going to be blunt but that’s such a stupid move, and the cook knows it. For all the supposed reliability you’ll gain, you’ll be driving a farm vehicle day to day.
Anyhow, someone got very lucky with your ride.

Just cancel the Playdo order, there is no way on earth I would go from my D4 to a Prado, maybe a 300 but wouldn't even consider the baby brother

Too late, Prado out the front of the house with bull bar etc all fitted ready to go.....
Not a bad ride but yes it much more like riding a barge than sailing a beautiful yacht. :)
Cooks fault... :O

PS. No buyer yet and I'm not giving it away at car yards prices just for them to tart it up and then bung 20K on top and flogging it immediately with instant finance offers. Had a long time Cruiser owner and his Mrs drive it and they love it but.... their own vehicle sale has failed due to buyers lack of finance. :(
I can wait and we'll alternate vehicle usage between the two.

I hope they've improved that awful 6 speed Aisin auto.
When I had a new Mux with it the box never knew which gear it wanted to be in and its not much better in my eldest son's 2021 Hilux.
The 8 speed ZF is light years away and sooo much smoother.
