Currently I have D4 SDV6 and D2 td5 and considering possibly D3 petrol to replace my D2. I know it will consume a lot and probably more expensive to run on fuel compare to diesel version.

There are not many people talk about the D3 petrol and wondering whether because it has less issue or because not many people have D3 petrol.

I am hoping to hear any advice/issue/what to look for about D3 petrol from D3 petrol owner or anyone that knows about the D3 petrol.

Thanks in advance

We looked at loads of V8 petrol HSE before we found the Antichrist. If I knew then what I know now I’d have bought a petrol. Based on my mileage and consumption, 5 years later I’d still be ahead.

Yeah what you pay on extra consumption you save in hell.

Had it since just before 100,000k. Now up to about 216. No signifiant problems other than a new alternator, but I suspect it’s the same one a Diesel would have anyway.

Only petrol issue I know to be careful of is the timing chain needs replacing in the mid to high 200s. Will start making a noise in ours soon I guess. The problem with it is it’s a body off job to replace the chain, so very expensive. Car will be worth nothing once the noise starts I guess.

From what I have read over the years of being bit of a LR tragic I would go the V8 if petrol was the fuel choice

What’s the reason?

What’s the reason?

Fuel use between the two is approx. the same but the V8 has more power/torque and is more reliable.

I haven't seen any V8 for sale. They must be very rare or very reliable so no one wants to sell it.

That and they were only built in 05/06, not seen the V8 in anything later except for the D4 when they went to the 5.0 V8 before moving to the SCV6.

One of the neighbours purchased one last year for $4k I think and it has over 500k km on it. As expected the interior is a bit worn and the clear coat is coming off the paint but otherwise it’s going strong.

I have not heard many bad reports on the 4.0l petrol D3's, like any other ice, they need maintenance, and timing chains is just one of them.

I loved my D4, but if I had the time again, I'd buy the SCV6, a rare animal, but would save me a lot of grief and diesel oil stains on my garage floor.

I was in your shoes 2.5 years ago, wife was upgrading from D2 v8 to D3.

I considered it all and told her to get a lower km D3 on Petrol. I just wanted less issues, I have diesels and they are not for her .

She did and it does use 15 L per 100 km but overall its been good, she only drives locally, mum's taxi.

We bought it with 120 000 km now its got 136 000 km

One door lock got stuffed, one air shocker started leaking ( that's one thing I don't like on new ones, the air suspension) and lower control arms had to be replaced.

I guess these are all common things with these.

Only the other day I noticed the idle pulley needs replacing other than that a solid car and a much better choice compared to many other range rovers...
