View Full Version : NSW Rego with no proof of ownership

Hi all, has anybody gone through the process of a new registration of a old Landy where you cant quite prove that it is your vehicle?
I've had the vehicle since 2009, never had it registered and I've never had plates with it - I bought it from a farmer who had let it go after an engine/gearbox failure.
Thinking that I would get it registered, I have been reading all that I can from Service NSW.
At this stage I cant see a way for me to get it registered as I don't have any recepts or proof of ownership.
It also reads like I cant use a Stat Dec in this case either.
The only way that I can think of registering it, is to sell it to a family member with a receipt from me, they register it, and then I buy the ute back and transfer the ownership that way.
But if this is possible, then surely I can just somehow register it myself without all of the faffing around???
I'd love to hear any thoughts or wisdom here! :lol2:
(edit: I have tried to contact the previous owner - I'm not expecting a reply)

Have you spoken the the RTA ?
They're not open.
Its my stumbling block for trying to get Club registration..... which turned into a stumbling block to just get registration.
I was hoping someone here had some experience at this stage.

Things may have changed but I’ve never shown proof of ownership when registering a “new” vehicle.

Doing a quick rego plate check, NSW don't seem to have this one on record. I wonder if it was last registered in another state. "New" might be the case. I think normally they just take the rego papers or notice of disposal.

I done it around 8-9 years ago. RTA didn't seem concerned that I didn't have any paperwork, what they were concerned about was that I didn't have the cars last plates, and they were never handed in. Had to talk to someone higher up to get it sorted.

Thats awesome, there must be a way then. I thought surely there must have been and that not every vehicle has proof of ownership. Thanks for this! It'll be interesting about the plates too, it didn't have any with it when I bought it either. I ran an RTA check on the issued plates when it was sold - no records.

Not necessarily in NSW, but a letter saying you bought vehicle ### on ### date for $$$ from ??? is enough to prove ownership. Do the letter now and with sellers name on it.....
Another potential issue will be proving the vehicle has been registered in Australia previously. Arming yourself with the CKD history may be enough to get you by.

What I have heard the way forward with a older vehicle is just get someone you know write you a hand written receipt with vehicle details and back date it and make up a price.
This only works on vehicle you know the previous history of and certain the RTA/ services NSW doesn't have a history of it on their records.
Anything from the 1980s backwards with last rego is safe as the computer records don't go back that far.
Just what I heard.......I wouldnt know about these things.

Thanks Chris and Ron, it may come to that too!
Proof of purchase
An original letter, bill of sale, receipt or tax invoice that includes:
seller’s name, address and signature
buyer’s name, address and signature (not required for small trailers bought from retail outlets)
date the vehicle was sold
selling price or market value of the vehicle (whichever is higher)
vehicle registration and VIN/Chassis numbers.

I've done this myself, albeit not in the land of cockroaches.

Had to recently re-register a vehicle in NSW that both the rego had expired and the plates handed in.
To complicate the matter even further we had been given the vehicle and had a receipt stating same!
The RMS or whatever they are trading under now stated that the vehicle would be valued for stamp duty at either market value or what we had paid whichever was the greater!
So we had to obtain another receipt with an acceptable price from the previous owner which was duly done.
It only needs to be a written note and doesn't even need to be signed just have the appropriate dollars of value listed along with the names of both buyer and seller.
Nobody capable of writing nearby?
Of course there is then the blue slip for checking the appropriate numbers and roadworthy, green slip and then of course the rego itself and then they also charge a minimum of $40 for yellow plates!

That all?? Some moons ago I reregistered a car here in Mehico. Ok, it was mine already, previously regoed in my name, RWC, all present and correct. It had the old plates still on it, and they started to take them off. For silly reasons I wanted to keep them. Sure, they said. $90 please! To keep the plates that the car had had for around ten years to my knowledge.

About a year or so ago I had to replace the plates on my 2a - they were only a bit over thirty years old, but the paint was peeling off them. I got charged for the plates, despite the fact that the only reason they needed to be replaced was because of faulty manufacture - the paint does not withstand this country's sunlight.

Same here, lots of plates in Qld have some rubbish paint that fades.
The last van i sold, the paint on the plates were badly faded,i cut and polished them and they came up pretty good and passed the roadworthy.
The Series 1 has 1966 plates,still going,paint is fine.
Even the original UK, '56 plates are still good, but they havent been in the weather for over 50yrs.

Down here that's a fine, for plates that are clearly not fit for purpose. The old Garden State ones are famous for it.

When I bought my last Goldwing it came with personal plates. The alfa numeric combination was of no relevance to me or the bike, but the gold and black was attractive on the gold bike.
Apart from the normal transfer and stamp duty fees, QT also wanted a fee to cancel the ownership of the plate from the OP, an equivalent fee to put the ownership into my name and further a $70 removal fee and another $70 attachment fee, even though nobody needed to remove or attach the plate.
Needless to say, I removed the plate and presented the bike as unregistered new business. :bat:

Have you spoken the the RTA ?
Quite a discussion today.
You need to have a receipt of sale from the previous owner of the vehicle to get it registered, you cant even do a stat dec anymore unless its a repo. I haven't been able to make contact with the previous owner - I showed Service NSW my efforts. I asked if to get a receipt do I need to sell the car and buy it back again. She said, unregistered cars can be passed through many owners before being registered again but I need a receipt with the details for a new registration. I said I understand and she smiled. She then gave me a Service NSW proforma receipt of sale and a pack which formed the "establish registration requirements for 2nd hand vehicles".
You guys are on the money as always!
Thanks for eveybodys help and input, greatly appreciated!

I love it when a plan comes together....
You can usually find a way around bureaucracy if you smile and find the right bureaucrat. As a last resort, play the 'mental health card'.. They can't ask.

I said it was an old Land Rover. :lol2:
Mum said, sure I'll buy an old heap of junk with a LOT of potential but doesn't work off you and see how long I like it for and then I'll sell it back to you.
I said I had never thought of it like that. :lol2:

Similar story. I acquired a rusted out trailer for free off facebook and gave it to a mate who refurbished it. When he went to register it they required a receipt. I supplied a receipt for $20 and now it is registered in his name.

Yes it's just a piece of paper that they have to have, nobody will ever check it's legit or that the "person" that signed it actually ever owned the vehicle in question.

That's it. They've done their bit. Mind you, I suppose there also isn't much more they can do.

It leaves a paper trail that could bring the forger unstuck, at a later time, should it turn out the vehicle had been previously stolen.

In Vic I only had a handwritten receipt on a torn off scrap of paper for my '73 Lightweight, no import papers , was not on govt records , and its previous rego plates belonged to a Red 1954 series1 in QLD , (explains why they painted the LWT red) , still managed to get rego , just had to get engineering compliance and a waiver from dept of infrastructure.
When I got the '52 Power Wagon registered I gave them a photo of a Snowy Hydro scheme Power Wagon with commonwealth plates as "Proof" it has been registered in Australia and an emailed receipt which I could have written myself. I already had an engineering cert though for my mods rather than for compliance.

This is pretty much what I am about to go through soon in registering my 1963 Forward Control project. I know it is ex PMG and have photos of a similar FC in PMG livery, with the same tray modifications for the scaffolding they carried to access the pole top furniture. This is my only available proof of previous Australian registration... And a typed purchase receipt from the guy I bought it off as a complete wreck.

Has your PMG photo got the rego number , I was lucky enough to get the old SMA Commonwelth rego number from the old photo as custom plates , maybe that convinced them it was the same truck [bigwhistle].

187697No, the PMG photo I have is a side on shot.
Do you know if the C plate photo was your actual vehicle? Have you found a database for C plates? I have a 1954 86" that I am 90% sure was a Woomera vehicle, and have even found a found a photo of the same vehicle type, year & colour at Woomera, with visible C plate, but have no way of linking them....

No paper trail that its the same vehicle, SMA destroyed vehicle records upon disposal, but when restoring the truck one door had SMA logo remnants , other door had DW Stevenson , Bega. I tracked down the Stevenson family and spoke to DW's son who drove it home from SMA Auction. Heresay suggests its the PW in this photo , as does the matching dent in original fender and running board , The serial number of mine puts it in the first batch of 6 delivered to SMA , which lines up with the 1953 date on the SMA photo. Good enough for VicRoads so I'll take Heresay as fact

187715Wow, great find and research that. I'd be happy it was the same vehicle.
A bit like trying to find a service photo of my 1942 Willys MB. I've found one with one ARN sequence down in a 1944 New Guinea photo, so close!
Sorry Slunnie, we've gone off topic.....
