Can you even mount a transfer case onto that one?

Thoughts?
Possibly some internals are the same but really not worth the effort.

I'm not sure if this helps or not: About 8 years ago I was hunting for a 4HP22 for my D2. Sure, different, but not by much. I found a cheap one from a P38. I emailed Dave Ashcroft re viability of swapping outputs. He said it could bee done, but considered it would be uneconomic to do so. Now, a P38 is far closer to a Disco than a BMW is. However, it's been some time since, and maybe the BM box isn't so different.
Not trying to put you off, just suggesting that maybe it's not as straightforward as you would hope.

A 95 BMW 325 E36 had a 5 speed electronic box, if the box you have is a hydraulic ZF 4hp22 it might be out of an 85 model E30.
If this is the case you will need to completely disassemble the box to swap both the output shaft and extension housing as well as the bell housing.
You'd be better off using the best hard parts from both boxes and giving it an overhaul with new clutches, O rings, bushes, teflon input seals, serviced torque converter etc, if the 300 Tdi is a keeper.

I recall reading about a P6B owner that modded a BMW autobox with some parts out of a LR autobox. I'd saved the link, and just found it.
Interesting read .. but then again I'm a P6 fanboi and like the idea of frankenworks mods like this ... hence the interest in the article.
LINK HERE. (https://www.aronline.co.uk/cars/rover/cars-brown-rover-receives-zf-transplant-part-one/)
Some points to note from having skimmed it again now. There are some differences in the boxes, not insurmountable, but points to note in the article.
Like the author has said, you may have to change the governor that controls the shift points .. ie. disassemble/reassemble internals .. not just swap out external housings.
I've had experience with high revving, zero low down torque, 323/325 BMs back in the day and the shift points are way way different to how a V8 with low down torque delivers is power.
I know the box has many similarities, can't remember exactly but the BM sump isn't so deep(but, obviously an easy swap over) ... I'd be thinking the major differences would be in both input and output shafts almost for sure.
If you have the BM box there can you check something ... my nephew likes to dabble in BM parts, and he had a 4HP22 out of a 323 he was getting rid of. I asked him to take photo of the dip stick for me. I can't remember( I must have deleted the photo??) but I think on the BM it's on the LH/passenger side, where on the LR(D1 era) it's on the RH/drivers side.
Not a problem in your situation, but I'm more interested in this for the D2(which don't have dipstick/filler tubes!) .. issues on the TD5 D2 is that it's so damned cluttered on the drivers side already, it'll be messy to get it fitted nicely/easily there. But as I said before, I also recall that the BM sump is not as deep(not ideal) in a D2.
