Today I went to an auction about 20km away. When I got home I unloaded it ASAP to get the stuff in the trailer under cover before the rain started, and parked and unhitched the trailer, before bring the 110 back to the carport to unload the back.

Shortly after finishing this, and going back inside it occurred to me "did I put the towball cover back on?" No need to go outside to look - just look at the right knee of my jeans!

Rule: Always put the towball cover back on as soon as you unhitch the trailer, and definitely before unloading the boot of your car.

I live in a dry and very dusty environment (and rough roads mean a lot of movement on the ball). Without grease I have learned over more than sixty years of towing, that both the ball and the coupling wear at a significant rate, and I did have on one occasion have a ball seize in the coupling. This not only caused no end of trouble freeing it, but loosened the ball on the tow bar.
