Hi all,
My lower ball joints have a small tear, no issue with the ball joints, so I would like to only replace the boot.
Where can I get them from?
Repco sells generic ones and many other places on ebay, has anyone bought any, any suggestion? What size?
cheers

See why nobody wants to talk about this... worst job in the D2 world, by a long long street.
When I did these on the D2 (got the mechanic to do the D2a, I'm not stupid twice) was looking for the same thing and was going to purchase them but the ball joint had some play.

Given my D2a was nearly 20 years old, I just paid the $$ ( about $700) and had AMV put in all new 4 ball joints when one of my boots cracked.
Easy and good fir another 20 years 😊

Well they do mention they are silicon as well, it is just the sizing that I am not sure of. Been a few years since my dalliance with this issue.
Sure there was info on AULRO re the sizing and that Repco had a fit with their second rate rubber ones which were not recommended (hence my search for quality at the time and finding the Gwyn Lewis site)
Comparing only the pictures, they look reasonably similar but the local one may require trimming around the 41mm end, or maybe not!

Suppose for mine, the extra is probably worth it for surety of sizing and you get the clips, as getting to the stage where you can find IF they fit is still a fair bit of work.

When there is no postage cost and item on EBAY, most of my experiences is that they are not here in AUS and are shipped from CHiNA, The cost of postage of a item is normally around $9 for AUSPOST...

There is a price premium for them against the pommy site.

Thanks mare , it says those are for top ball joints, I am guessing they would be the same size for the lower ones?
I might buy it, 35 bucks delivered for 2... it could be an easy and cheap fix.

Just a word from the defeated.
I tried for about 7 hours and 2 broken tools to remove a bottom ball joint to replace the boot, without damaging the joint by using a Pickle Fork.
A press that looked strong wasn't.
I gave up and just made up a sort of cover out of rubber tube and garden twine and greased it regularly. It is still OK.
Recently I bought a really big press from the USA , but now sold the car and gave the new owner the new ball joints.
If you use a pickle fork you will damage the joint so are then committed to replace it. I bought a pickle fork but couldn't face the job again.
This is to actually split the joint taper from the upright. Top one was OK but the bottom one!
I was planning to have to cut through the taper and then maybe drill through the remains on the bench.
Regards PhilipA
I bought my boots from a USA company.

I need to do rwc, and cracked ones will not pass.
I already bought a new lower ball joints, might as well get the top ones and get the mechanic to do the job.
I was under impression it would be much easier and straight forward to release the lower ball joint from lower control arm and replace the rubber.

Do think it is a great idea! As noted early, do not think anyone thinks this is an easy job, some have gone alright but this is probably only 1 in 10, 20, or even worse. The other point is the one Simon made, they wont need to be done again in the next decade.
Hope your mechanic has not done D2 ball joints before, when I got the D2a done at the mechanics they swore they will not do D2's again and had only quoted me $400!
