How many quote should I get for painting the outside window?

Hi guy just need some advise, I need my windows painted as they where last painted by Mario about 20+ years ago.
And they need to have some work done on them before winter

Always ask for three separate quotes from tradesmen. By doing that you will get 3 prices & then sort out the dearest & the cheapest. Remember though, the cheapest anything is not always the best job so it pays to add a bit for the risk you run.

You will need to know type of paint they will be using & that will be depend on the window facing NSE & W.
Gloss, Semi-gloss. Oil Based or Water- Based (Acrylic, & then choose the gloss you require.


Try & get referrals from friends & neighbors if poss. Pin the "Quoters" down to when they can start & finish to suit you. Be prepared for higher prices as every man & his dog seems to have jacked their prices up since Covid started on just about everything, Some may pick up your situation so no bull****, but I'm sure you are astute enough to sort them out.

The house was painted last year by a friend that finished of all Mario's reo's, inside and outside, he didnt want me to have the worry of the house, but he didnt do the windows. The house has Turbands weather shield full gloss and water based. So I am going to asked them to paint with the same brand and full gloss. The front windows get all the sun and rain on them, 2 of them need to have some putty replaced as Mario's replaced it 20 years ago, and putty has broken down. I am more than happy to buy the Turbands weather shield myself. I think Mario has taught me will not to take bull. Thanks again for your help, I knew I can rely on this group Heather

Italian government tender selection is - or at least was, - to eliminate the extremes, average the rest and start with the one (s) closest to this figure.

Or you could also ring around the Yellow Pages as some painters specialise in. "No job too small" - Usually 'All Women' outfits. Measure the windows and/or take pics of them.

Yeah, I miss the Yellows,,, easy to write notes & prices against the adverts.

Heather, be aware that acrylic paint can be more sticky than enamel even when dry, so can cause sliding or even hinged windows to be difficult to operate.

I have the old sash windows which are the original ones, and in the kitchen we have 2 wind out windows. and the laundry and bath room and one bed room has sliding aluminum windows. A real mix of windows lol, due to Mario reno lol job when we bought the place in1988.

We had a surprising amount of trouble finding a painter - one guy actually wanted to be paid in cash (unmarked non-sequential notes presumably): wouldn't provide an invoice, didn't have insurance. We then went through Dulux (they have approved painters) and got a guy who did an excellent job, people actually remark on how good the outside looks. So I'd suggest checking out Dulux.

Hello Heather,

Some years ago local, state and federal governments required that the supply of items or services over a certain dollar value required at least three quotes from different suppliers. One quote for each potential supplier.

Time had to be taken to carefully detail just what product or services were given to each supplier - so they were all working from the same description. Back then you did not have to accept the lowest bidder either. I am not sure if things have changed now about which bid you can accept.

It is very important that each potential supplier details the type of materials - in your case brand and type of paint - what preparation work and final finish they will use. One supplier could use the cheapest paint and just cover over rotten timber. Others might replace damaged putty around windows - sand back to bare timber and repair or replace unsound materials - like rotten timber. Also, they should be asked to tell you the number of coats of paint they will apply. Whether they use primer or one coat does wonders and covers a multitude of sins - for a month or two. It also depends what level of quality job you want done.

Definitely yep, they know the shonks in the industry & we did that with Solver some

years ago, & we had Eric back 14 years later although he did stress not to ask him after another 14 as he was planning on packing it in & retiring. Bugger! [bigsad]

I recall he insisted his Cuppa was to be very strong & black as soot. & his choice of music was really terrible.


Typical Northern UK bloke, Yorkshire, I think he was from..[bigrolf][thumbsupbig] Lionel makes a good point. Make sure they give to you in writing the "Builders Lic. Insurance" details, applicable here in SA but not sure about other states. Usually it is placed on the Quotation.
ie. Co.Insured Amount. etc.

HE has included all the prep work and the paint I want him to use, it is all started in the quote. Happy with price, I asked a the friend that finished off all the reno's and painted the walls outside. He said that what he thinks it should cost. And I don't have to give him any money until he starts the job 8/1 at 8am, which is only 20% and will take a week to do due to the height of some windows here.
