View Full Version : River Crossing Fail

Last week on my property I decided to take my 5.0 S/C RRS across our river (about a foot deep, loose river rocks). Complete fail. I made it a car length in with a bang. A perfectly sized river rock dropped through the hole in the mag wheel, spun around and cracked the brake calliper. I managed to back out, which also didn’t do it much good…all 4 mags got somewhat bashed up by spinning in river rock.

Am I stupid in attempting that? This is my 4th Range Rover, and I’ve always liked the fact that I can drive up to the farm in luxurious comfort and then head around the property.
Most of our land is across that river. I had to resort to the clapped out 30 year old Pajero [emoji849].
Maybe time to go back to a L322 [emoji848]

It wasn't the car, it was the fault of those 'orrible wheels.

Never would have entered my head that that could happen! I'd just chalk it up to bad luck, repair the damage and forget about it.

Done similar on a previous vehicle, open pattern wheels, with ridiculously low profile pattern are ok at best in sand.

Once you add loose rock to the equation, anything that can fit between spikes is asking for trouble.

I guess the supercharged version is more of an ‘on road’ car…purely because of the wheel and tyre limitations. I’m hooked on the power now though. Not sure I could go back to a diesel…

Just get some 20 inch wheels without the large openings and fit a set of all terrain tyres.

What can you get?

This is something I never thought about happening ! Bad luck. But I guess the larger the holes, the larger rock that would fit and more chances of one falling in, but i guess pretty much anything but steelies this could happen too.

Tuffant makes after market rims, otherwise there is factory 19" , but you may not have many choices if you have the larger "6 pot" brembo brakes on the front.

Far out, I think that was just bad luck!

I would probably go for something like this for the wheels (either style shown in picture):

More tyre options in 265/50R20 which will be suitable. I like the Falken Wildpeak At3’s but the Nitto Grappler’s may be a good alternative.

Yes…definitely going AT tyres next.
Thanks for the info about Tuffant. They would solve the issue. The Kimberley 20” is the only model that would fit. I’ve actually got a slight warp in two of my rims from a previous pothole incident [emoji849], so probably worth replacing soon anyway.

didnt know they made a kimberley 20, must be new, would the factory 19" fit ? as you can get a set of them for under $500

Not sure…does anyone here know if 19” would fit?

19 inch should fit, but this limits your tyre choice.

20 inch gives you better tyre choices, and you can also pick up second hand wheels as well.

I have 19" on my 2007 RRS with the Pirelli Scorpion A/T's

The coopers Ive currently got are great, lasting ages, cheap when on special, and by going 19" you can go a bit over size on the tire wall than on a 20"
