I do a lot of remote touring and have to hold onto rubbish for a long time. At the moment I use a rubbish bag in the car. As a D4 doesn't have a rear wheel to hook a bag onto, I'm wondering what the creative people have done to overcome this problem. This is where I want to put the bag but it needs to be protected from rocks hitting it from underneath the car and it has to hang straight when the tailgate is down so you can still use it. One idea is to mount the bag onto a backing board and then use a hinged bracket of some sort to hook over the lower tailgate. Easy to remove when in town too.

Any other snippets of wisdom?

If you have a roof rack then a large dry bag will work.

Crate with a garbage bag in it works well up there also.

Thanks for the suggestions but I really want something that hangs off the tailgate so it's always usable. I had thought of the roof top solution but has the chance of getting torn off by overhanging bracnhes or losing it's load some other way plus for me the roof space is taken up by other objects already.

Hi Rod, my solution is not a pretty one but we hang our bag off of the roof ladder. If you have a roof rack then a ladder would serve two purposes. Just a thought [bigsmile1]

Surely something designed for a pick-up tailgate would work on the back of a D3/4?
Maybe one of these?

I happened to be in RTM the other day and picked up one of these roadtechmarine.com.au (https://www.roadtechmarine.com.au/water-proof-black-duffle-bag-45l/p/MKA236?pos=3&queryId=587ff0758c839251532b79d88c6049bf) which happens to be a perfect fit for the RHS of the tailgate. I glued a wooden back inside the bag and also an aluminium plate on the outside to act as a slide over the bumper and it's water proof. This allows the bag to hang down when the tailgate is lowered. I had to cut out some holes in the top of the tailgate to fasten straps through. I'm also going to put an occy strap from the top right of the bag and hitch it to the Mitch Hitch to stop the bag from bouncing all over the place. Haven't tried this on the road yet so I don't know how long it will last.

I hope that metal plate wont rub on the back of the door as you drive along?

My immediate thought, too.

Fit a swing-away bike rack using the tow hitch.

Or one of these:

Tyre Trek - Australian Made Towbar Mounted Spare Tyre Carriers (https://www.tyretrek.com.au/)

and hang it off that.

I hope that metal plate wont rub on the back of the door as you drive along?Yes it might and then I'll think about making it rubber backed. Might even do it now!

Well there goes:

The dust seal on the tailgate
The paint on the tailgate and bumper

Vibrations and a little dust will turn that thing into an orbital sander and ruin the vehicle.
