SLS Warning Light

My SLS warning light along with the annoying bonging come on randomly. When it happens a visual inspection of vehicle height appears ok.

To clear it I have to pull over and turn ignition off. It seems to becoming more frequent and very annoying.

Nanocom says that there are no faults.

Anyone got any ideas as to where I start looking for this problem?

Have you checked the Nanocom with the light/audio still on, Dave?

It came on again today, but strangely there were no bongs.

So before I turned the engine off I plugged nanocom in. I went into SLABS and hit faults button.

It said "working". After about one minute it comes back with "Communication error 1"

I click ok and it then says "Unable to start communication with ECU"

I shut down nanocom and tried again with the same result.

I then turned engine off, key on and did it all again. Nanocom then says "no faults found"

After I press ok I get all the SLABS warning lights illuminated.

Hilldecent
SLS fault
Extended height.

When I exit SLABS in nanocom they all go out. Is this normal?

Hi, what you describe with the warning lights with nanocom connected is normal, as about the random SLS warning without fault code logged can be an ECU misbehaviour also i've seen twice in such cases when the fault was intermittent that nanocom reported no SLS codes while hawkeye found it stored as hystorical.

So are you suggesting that I source a SLABS ECU to see if this rectifies the problem?

I was thinking that maybe the SLABS ECU might be the problem, but was looking for any other ideas before I start throwing money at a guess.

Is the SLABS ECU the same for all D2's?

All i can tell for sure is that the SLS warning alone + bongs without a fault code logged can show itself if the voltage gets low or the SLABS ECU makes tricks... but as i said nanocom can miss hystorical codes for intermittent issues so to be sure you'll have to plug in a hawkeye, testbook, lynx, autologic or other LR dedicated diagnostic tool otherwise it's still a guess but a quite strong one

any warning light can come on randomly if there is a wiring issue on that circuit but then would not be the bongs too cos the audible warning is on a different wire

No it's not, in a nutshell: there are early modells up to the facelifts(these will disable the ABS/TC and bring on the warning lights when the diff is locked) then the facelift modells which are uprated(no ABS/TC lights and functions partially retained with locked diff) and the latest SRD500070 which is the best with locked diff... though any of them will work on any modell as i described

I have finally solved this issue. After a lot of thought I realised that the problem started after fittiong a new compressor.

The replacement compressor was Chinese. I refitted the original and have now driven to the Sunshine coast and half way home with no issue.

Obviously, the SLABS did not like the Chinese stuff.

That's very strange ... if the ECU didnt like it it should have logged a fault code or the SLS would have misbehaved IMO, i have a chinese compressor on mine, fitted it last year and no issues at all.

Whilst the Chinese compressor was in, I could rarely go more than 50 kms without the fault.


Since putting the original back in I have now done about 1500 km.

When I have time, I will chuck the China one back in and see what happens.
