Does anyone know what this sound could be? Help needed please

Hi all,

09 D3 v6 petrol.

10 days ago, I installed a new idle pulley and a new belt.

Everything worked perfect , no funny noises running great.

Tonight, I hear thus noise when wife was parking in the car.

Pop the bonnet, take the cover off and to me it sounds like it could be coming from a water pump pulley... I could be wrong...

Can a new tensioner pulley and belt put a bit more "tightness" on the water pump which could cause it to sound like this? Maybe the water pump pulley was on its way out just like old tensioner pulley..

The old tensioner had movement in it hence it might have been a bit play with the old belt...

It is not coming from inside the engine , I can hear more when I put my ear to front of the car Infront of the grille.

Hi all, got into it a bit this morning, I used my stethoscope to listen to all the pulleys while the car runs.

All off them sound ok, I did hear a bit more noise when I touched the top of the water pump.

I took the belt off and checked all the pulley's for odd noise or any movement.

All of them again looked ok but when I grabbed the water pump pulley and moved it back and front there was a slight maybe a 1 mm or 1.5 mm movement.

Water pump looks original and at 140 000 km I would think it is coming to end of it's service life. If the tension pulley I changed recently was dying it makes sense that pump would be on it's last legs. There are no leaks and it doesn't overheat.

My understanding from changing water pump's previously is that there should NOT be any movement whatsoever there unless a bearing inside of the pump is starting to give up. Correct?

Like said previously I only heard this yesterday, so the noise is just starting hence it was a bit harder to determine where it is coming from.

Thoughts?

Took the pulley off and there is definitely a small movement there.. I guess once the belt is on and pressure is there, even a small movement will start to make noises.

I guess a new water pump and thermostat while I am in there. I am hope I correct :) Pump looks like it's OEM.

With the fan off, and engine cold, put the serpentine belt back on and then record a slow motion video and make sure you can see all pulleys when recording.

When you play back the slo-mo video, you should be able to match the frequency of the noise (beats per minute) with the pulley that does one rev at the same rate (same rpm).

It is easier to match when played back in slo-mo.

Found this, good price and it looks the same, I might give them a buzz.

I used the brand before many times never had an issues. Don't even want to know what dealership would charge..

Before you put it all back together, check the fan bearing.

Edit: ^^^ may or may not be applicable, I was thinking you had a Td5.
