Post your holiday photos with your Land Rovers here. Happy holidays; Merry Christmas; Safe and Happy New Year's one and all.

Fpr example, bringing the tree home tonight, (currently parked at the grocery store picking up a few things on the way home) now that the kids have returned from school. It's definitely a convenience to have the camper top in checkered plate.188178

I must admit that it annoys me when people post, for example, general Defender questions in the Isuzu section just because their vehicle has a 4BD1.

Really, that section should be for stuff that relates only to the engine.

Now I’ll Google “Grinch”.

I suppose it may have been annoying to you, and apologize for triggering you if so, but as I own three Rovers, all 'Isuzu' Rovers, I ask you may instead consider the intent of the holiday greetings to have been Isuzu specific. Over the years, the friendships, help, and support both given and received have been mostly Isuzu Rover specific, and thus, I intentionally posted my message in that forum. After being a member for several years now and often participating only in Isuzu or Perentie threads, I hadn't considered anyone would see it as a transgression, but now I will consider it going forward.

It’s been quite common for some to post everything in the forum relating to their model car - it’s as if they only look there.

There was nothing in your post to indicate the thread was only for Isuzu owners.

Late 60's,somewhere in north Qld.

I can still remember helping put up and pull down that big canvas tent, and all the wooden poles. It took a lot of room up in the SWB LR.That is why we usually had the trailer in tow.Putting that tent up daily when travelling was very tedious.

scarry
23rd January 2024, 08:07 PM
Yes the RTT are slightly more convenient,(until you want to go for a pee),the big canvas tent didn't even have a floor, but we did have camp beds that were up off the ground.
One day as kids we woke up and there were hundreds newly hatched freshwater tortoises wandering down to the lake, and through the tent.
That was at Fraser camped near Coomboo lake. Can only walk in to that lake now.

I'll keep the rooftop option, on some trips it's the most convenient option.

Bloody hopeless in the soft sand, underpowered, shovels, the winch, snatch blocks, recovery gear got a continual work out, with lots of colourfull language from the old Man.[bigrolf]
Not many around to help in those days.

We got one bogged over on the Western side of the island, trying to get off the beach and stayed the night, didn't get it out until the next day[biggrin][bigsad]

All trips on Gordon’s barge,my late Father did a lot of environmental research on the island.
From 1969 to 1974.
He became great friends with Gordon.
I think the barge started late 1968.

The surf fishing there in those days was unbelievable.

We got stuck into a school of Taylor in 1970 - released over 30 into the Champagne Pool. Great times.
Unfortunately, I lost my camera on day 1 when driving from the barge to Happy Valley so no photos. However, I did get the camera back as a guy picked it up before the incoming tide got it, and he kindly left his contact details with Gordon.

It saddens me to see ships in that condition compared to what they were like at fitting out when they looked their smartest, but that's me. It sounds like she had a good life both in her civilian & Medical roles until fate took a hand & she is where she is. [bigsad]

I once walked the decks of Scott's Discovery before she was relocated from the Thames to Dundee where she was built, in fact I saw her again this a.m. as the back drop for "Antiques Roadshow," Dundee.

I recall walking in to Capt Scott's quarters & feeling a Vague presence there (maybe it was Sir John Mills??), but that was probably me returning to my History Books but one can't help those feelings of being there before, probably many WW1 Soldiers & Medical Staff have since walked the decks of your ship before the rust set in & felt much the same.

Coming on deck again it was snowing & very cold (it was January) so that did add to the atmosphere, I could not have arranged it.[bigrolf]

The Brits also have Cutty Sark & Sir Francis Chichester's Gypsy Moth around the Globe Yacht also on Display at the same Site on the Thames & a couple at Plymouth if you happen to be going that way one day.

I've never used one, but watched a fellow pump up a tyre that way many years ago. The same thought has occurred to me about the petrol vapour/residue.

Anyway, he seemed to use it a quite regularly and drove off happily. Mind you, he ran over a bit of flint moments later and the left front of his vehicle exploded, but it was probably just a coincidence.

I used these in the two years I spent in the Simpson sixty years ago. No, contrary to what you might think at first glance, there is no petrol vapour output by the pump. A little oil perhaps.

Operated with the engine idling, there is a pretty good vacuum in the inlet manifold - and the pump fitting that has replaced the spark plug has an inlet valve to atmospheric pressure, so the cylinder being used is filled with air coming in that way, rather than from the inlet manifold.

In my experience, the issues with these as a tyre pump are:-

1. They get hot! This may lead to singed fingers when removing them, and the rubber hose near the fitting tends to be short lived.

2. They are allowing unfiltered air into the cylinder. Not the best idea in a dusty environment.

3. If used frequently, can lead to damage to the spark plug hole thread, especially with an alloy head.

I was thinking more a sudden Blowout & not a slow leak but it seems that was thought out.

Hi,
I made one for our 25000km motorbike trip in1976.
It would inflate a car tyre in less than 30 seconds. Carried it on the bike for more than 30 years and never used it roadside.
The BMW had two cylinders, and by un clipping one carby float bowl and turning off the fuel it would still start and run long on the other cylinder long enough to inflate a tyre with only fresh air from the non firing cylinder.
The hose was very sturdy and just long enough to reach the rear wheel if rotated so the valve was forward.
Now, I think they use small CO2 cylinders, small enough to fit a pocket .
Cheers

Thanks for those wonderful photos. It's a bit sobering how quickly "NOW!" becomes...historic. These really are photos from another time, less than a lifetime ago. There's a lesson in that for all of us. If anybody knows what it is, please let me know.

On another note, I wanted to ask about the roof of the cab on that Landy. It looks like some sort of tropical roof. Are you able to tell us a little about that?

Thanks,

John

Wnen I arrived in Melbourne from NZ in 1967 I wanted to buy a Land Rover. I eventually bought this from a mob called Carthy Motors. It was a Pilchers Ambulance from Woomera Rocket Range. He was having difficulty selling it and offered it to me for 1700 pounds. I agreed if he would fit an extra tank to the LHS which he did. It had a fold up seat , bunk arrangement on one side and rails for a folding stretcher on the other. It had 12000 miles on the clock and served me faithfully for many years. I eventually sold it to a school teacher in Mt Hagen after I was transferred to New Ireland I took a series one project car with me then.
Yes it had a factory tropical roof over the cab. I took the body off for a while to make it better as a work truck on a mileage allowance.

Thats a good thread with some piks of Johns (JDNSW),s Land Rovers as well.

Sitting here having Smoko I remembered Australia went Decimal in 66 so that must have been 1700 dollars. I forget now but it was 1700 anyway.,

Wouldn't that be filling one's wheel with Petrol Vapour?

Never used one of those.

No, there is a reed valve that opens on the piston down stroke (so air is drawn in from outside of the engine) and closes on the up stroke to allow the piston to pump the air into the tyre. I have one in the garage. I'll hook it out for a photo.

Wait! I already have photos on my PC. This unit is a Schrader item.

The AULRO Isuzu engine committee would like to reciprocate the Christmas greetings to our Isuzu cous' in the US, although in the committee's defense the committee did not see the post until nearly 3 months after its initiation, given it was moved, and given we rarely look out side the Isuzu forum![biggrin]

It has taken on a life of it's own. There is obviously a need for a thread like this...regular family and friends have low tolerances for green slides, interminable photos of the Maheno, etc

Where the Talawana track crosses the canning
We actually did not do the canning.
what we did
Adelaide to the Flinders ranges
Flinders ranges to Mt dare via the Oodnadatta track, East into the Simpson on the rig road then north on the Coulson track to the Madigan line, then west to the Andado Alice springs track.
From Alice west to the Mcdonald ranges and along further west to Kintore we then went south on the sandy blight track to the Giles weather station, then west on the central rd to the Heather highway, north to the Gunbarrel to the Gary junction track, and north again to the Talawana track west again crossing the canning stock route past Pangurr and then north again to the queen of the desert baths in the Rudall river national park ,north again towards the Telfet gold mine but turned west 30kms short past thr nifty mine and onto the woody mine area where we got on the bitumen, then Marble bar ,Broome to Halls creek, then south east down the Tanami via Balgo to the Sturt high way, noth east to Gemtree on to the Binns track and loop around Alice to come in from the south.south down the old Ghan track to Finke. one of the cars in the group broke down and limped back to Adelaide we went back to the Flinders for another coupe of weeks. Approx 10000 kms but we did have an engine light fault that was soon cleared.

Did the cape in the eighties. Came across a Daihatsu which had expired. Appeared to be heavily loaded with barely enough room inside or out for the 2 occupants to squeeze in

When talking to the driver he commented that had only brought what was essential and was traveling light. Loaded on top of all the gear on the roof rack was a set of golf clubs in their bag and trolley

What is "essential" seems to have steadily increased over the years. My first real 4wd "trip" in 1964 (as opposed to just going somewhere for work) was from Roma, where I was working at the time, to PA via Broken Hill, and up through the Centre to Mt Isa and back to Roma with a few side trips, with my brother.

This was in a swb Series 2. Main essentials carried, as far as I can remember were extra fuel (4 jerricans), water (two 4 gallon drums) a tent, sleeping bags, a couple of billies, a modest supply of non-perishable food, a couple of tin plates and mugs, towels and teatowels. Each of us had a small kitbag with spare clothes and things like a camera.

Tools etc - assorted spanners, pliers, screwdrivers, a couple of hose clips, a bit of electrical wire, Scope soldering iron and solder, spare fan belt, pair of rear halfaxles borrowed from work, and, of course, jack, jacking plate, wheel spanner, and spare tube and a stack of vulcanising patches and a manual tyre pump. And a gallon of engine oil.

Navigation - oil company maps covering the planned route.

There was almost no car trouble, except one flat from a nail picked up when pulling off the Barkly Hwy to camp.

Outside of towns, the only sealed roads on the trip were Roma to Surat and Alice to Mt Isa. The only vehicles seen outside towns between PA and Alice were four cars and utes (travelling both directions) and two of these were broken down. That was over three days. Camping for two nights, there was no traffic overnight. And no trucks at all, and certainly no buses.

Since then, I see that the "essentials" have grown steadily. 189478

We were the same, just imagine going to Fraser island in the early 70's with all the food, gear, tools, etc, etc, etc for 8 weeks, two adults,4 kids, in a SWB Land Rover, and a small wooden trailer.
Just the large canvas tent filled up most of the vehicle. We could get fuel on the island, but still carried 3 fuel jerrries. We brought all the food and other supplies with us.
No fridge either, but the fishing was fantastic,so it was often on the menu, but we spent quite a lot of time inland, away from the coast,so were not fishing all the time.
No maps, just arial photographs, most of the tracks were overgrown fire breaks.
On later trips we had some sort of two way radio for communication, and a larger LWB vehicle which gave us more room, but it struggled with the weight, and with the heavy newer steel trailers.
