View Full Version : Does Such a Socket Extension Bar Exist

I am in a position where I need to drive a 1/2" socket extension bar by a 19mm socket. There are various ways I could so this eg grind the drive end (female end) of a 1/2" extension bar into a 19mm hex, or weld a bolt with a 19mm head to the drive end (female end) of the extension bar but the easiest would be if there was an extension bar with a 19mm hex head on one end and the normal 1/2" drive at the other.

Something like a grown up version of this. I have looked online everywhere but not seen anything other than the small 1/4" adaptor in the pic.

So does anyone know if such a an adaptor/extension bar exists - ie 19mm hex at one end and a 1/2" drive at the other.

Thanks

Garry

Hex driver.in 19mm with a 1/2 m/m adaptor from some ratchets and torque wrenches

The part you want I know used tomexist out of Stahl wille as a drive adaptor for their torque wrenches.

I'd be enquiring at Total Tools, Sydney Tools etc., directly, not relying on the websites. They often know where to get items that are not in their inventory.

If I'm understanding correctly, you need a 19mm allen key with a 1/2' drive?

sydney tools allen socket (https://sydneytools.com.au/product/ultimate-tools-64826019-12-drive-19mm-inhex-metric-impact-socket)

(some)Bunnings may also have them, but don't count on it. It has to be a well stocked Bunnings, as some are useless and their tool areas are mostly bare!

If I got it wrong and you need a female drive end to drive your tool, you can get male to male adapters for that tool, so instead of a female drive end, you have a male drive end exposed.

Thanks but that is not it - one end needs to have a standard (male) 1/2" drive. The other end needs to have a 19mm (male) Hex head.

Yep, then the 19mm allen socket plus 1/2 " drive male to male adapter will do it for 'ya.

Yeah, I needed a 7/16 sized key, and went to two local Bunnings' and their respective boards(of these tools) were 90% devoid of any of the individual tools they claim to have there.
The only option I had in buying a tool was to buy the kit version at near $100.
The 7/16 size allens only comes in the large format key sets(ie. expensive), rather than the regular small-medium(cheaper) sets, which graduate only up to 3/8" in the imperial sizes .. not 7/16 like I needed.

I just bought 5/16 nuts/bolts kit which use 7/16 head sizes and locked them up to create a makeshift 7/16 'allen key'.

But the same issue with that tool, as the linked one I posted .. female drive end, where 101RRS requires the male drive end.

Alternative to the male to male adapter that I mentioned could be the connection shaft of a 1/2" drive universal flex adapter. They look like the square shaft (that connects the two flexi ends) is 1/2" square ... and could be hacked to serve as the male-male adapter.
If you have one and can punch out the pins that hold it together, I reckon it'd work.

Arthur, I do you a disservice - long after I responded the light in my little brain came on and I realised that you suggestion would in fact suit what I needed and I needed to think outside the box [bigwhistle].

This morning I googled a hex drive and found plenty listed - all with a female 1/2" end and none with a male 1/2" end. And Bunnings supposedly had them - well you were right they didn't but Sydney Tools did - in impact grade which is fine for what I need.

What I didn't expect was how hard it is to source the male to male 1/2" drive connector/adaptor. I went to every toolshop in Canberra and none sold them or carried them, yet they are online every where.

188239
So in the end I just bought a standard 1/2" drive extension and I will grind it to look like the connector.

All this comes about because you change wheel nuts on an old car and the wheel brace (original) no longer fits and you do not to permanently modify it or use a different wheel brace because it will not match the car - where a hex drive and 1/2" drive connector is easily disguised in the tool kit.

Thanks

Garry

Thanks Lionel, as discussed in my previous post - yes it will work and while listed as available at Bunnnings, they are in fact not carried - maybe a special order.

Hello Garry,

I just copied Kincrome 19mm 1/2" Drive Hex Bit Socket and pasted it into eBay and multiple Australian suppliers were shown. The eBay suppliers seem to be higher in price than what Bunnings are currently advertising.

Some special orders at Bunnings can take a matter of days - up to a couple of weeks. It would be worthwhile investigating the possibility. It depends upon the amount of hurry involved.

If you do the cut and paste into Amazon - a retailer has two currently in stock for only $20. Hurry and you might be able to snaffle one! The one shown on Amazon's page looks like it has a shorter shank though.

Kind regards
Lionel

Reasons don't matter as much as finding the solution that works for you I guess.
FWIW: I wouldn't modify it either, and would also find a workaround like this too.

Hopefully the extension grind ends up working for ya. I find grinding tools down is too tedious unless it's the only option. Still tedious, but if it's the only option then that tedium has to be accepted!

I would have done the 1/2 drive universal hack job myself tho.
I noted that Supercheap have a ToolPro brand tool like this where the 'pins' look like set screws with allen head screws. So (possibly) could have been an easy hack.

Also, if you do try to search again, there is a Sidchrome SCMT14925 (https://www.sidchrome.com.au/product/extension-3/) version of the male to male adapter.
Online search shows that the only 'store'(real store, not virtual type) is a Blackwoods in Fyshwick. They list it as a product, but no info if it's in stock.
Other stores have them at about $20ish.

Haha - Blackwoods in Fyshwick is one of the tool stores I went too [biggrin]. Checked their board for the joiner and then asked the bored old guy sitting behind the service desk. Answer to my question was "sorry made never sold em".

What I am finding is that what companies show as being in stock vs what is actually in stock is often totally different.

So now just to grind about 1" of round to a 1/2" square on the extension bar and cut it off.

Thanks to you and Lionel for your help [thumbsupbig]

I’ve got two of those - one is 1/2” square, the other 3/8” square.

They are part of my Warren & Brown torque wrenches.
