I currently own a L494 SDV8 and have been considering a MY2018 + L405. I tow a Van, Zone which weighs about 3.3 ton fully loaded and 290 kgs TBW.

I have managed to get my axle weights close by replacing both Lead Battery's with iTech Lithium starter batteries, and removing the rear mufflers.

My questions:

Does the LWB L405 have a higher rear axle load?
Are their any members that tow with their 405's
What are the differences with the models, Vogue, Vogue SE , Biography, which is the best value option ?
What options should I be looking for ?

Bails, hope this is some useful info ! I weighed mine (MY17) at the “refuse Centre” - it’s 2800kg with full load of fuel and me (78kg) on board. Mine is a heavily optioned (ex LR Exec vehicle) VogueSE SDV8. I haven’t yet weighed the car by axle so not sure what weight is over my rear axle. I have a third battery custom fitted in drivers side rear boot (passenger side has rear air fitted).

I’ve towed a bit and like most LR - it’s awesome. Anything that’s got 750nm and is 3 plus tonnes laden - I guess tows well!!

Don’t bother doing any changes to the exhaust - I added a Roo Systems twin 2.5 cat back - waste of money given the dpf etc

Note post MY16 you’ll be stuck with adblu and a 85l diesel tank not 105l. I suspect you could remove adblu (you can delete dpf, adblu etc if you want to ….(!!)) and fit a sub tank with ease. A guy in Sydney with a V8 petrol has done this and added 60 plus litres.

Overall - great tow car, great car full stop. We are at 135000kms and will be long term owners.

Cheers

The weights are interesting, I also weighed my L494 at the tip, me 100kg full fuel , some tools and small fridge, 2780 Kgs. Did not check the axle weights as the weighbridge not set up for this. Rear axle Max is 1775 seems same as FFR and total 3275 , so with me in I have 500 kgs up my sleeve. It has me beat how Land rover can state that the tow ball weight can be 350 kgs without a disclaimer that the car can't do this if there is any rear seat passengers , would think Land Rover could lose a court action if an unsuspecting owner over loaded rear axle based on their claimed Tow Ball weight.

Every other similar vehicle manufacturer would have the same issue. That is utes, single/dual cab, and large/medium 4WD wagons.
Some of the large US utes also have the same problem.

Does the LWB still exist past 2017 ? Notice the wheelbase is 200 mm longer than the L494, Seems the standard L405 has the same wheel base as the L494.

As I am looking for a tow vehicle it seems the long wheel base would be One I should consider.

Just occurred to me that the add may not include LWB. Is there a visible method of determining if a 405 is the LWB version?

Hello Good People - Long time lurker but not too many posts - so thanks to all the contributors - certainly a wealth of knowledge out there.

Im pondering an update model L405 TDV8 apart from some revised lines, lights seats and bling (facelift) are there any material mechanical under the skin changes that happened with the facelift from the pre 2018/19 update - for example I know the very early 4.4TDv8s had some issues and there were incrementally revised - timing chains rollers etc. I cant seem to find a definitive source of information on the under the skin stuff.

We have a L494 (2017) and have done the dreaded oil cooler orings - all fine now. I was wondering if the 2018/19 update may have addressed some of this issues. Any suspension or transmission tweaks?

Thanks and Regards

Steve
