Twice, once yesterday and again today I have had a notification from  about someone trying to log into my id. Both times were from Morocco. Fortunately they are right onto this. But now I have to remember a new password.... Sigh.

I use a password manager so I just get that to create a new password for me as needed. A bit of a faff to set up and migrate everything over to but there's now only 1 password I need to remember and I have 2FA enabled on it so my phone is required as well. Worth doing your homework if you've been considering one - they aren't all created equal and there are pros and cons to most of them. Still, now I've done this I wouldn't go back. App on the phone or on my computer is only 1 password every time, everywhere. The actual passwords they generate are completely random so near impossible to brute force and takes only a few clicks to change a password somewhere without having to memorize it.

Been using a password manager for a while, but then it went to a subscription service, which I hate as I had already paid for it upfront. Apple's KeyChain is what I will use now I guess. And yeah, what they generate would be completely unguessable.

Been using B.I.L's WIN laptop with Kaspersky, but now back on Mac. (2011) so....
Any suggestions for a freebie anti- everything? AVG. or Avast ? Or ???

On a Mac? Nothing, although I would suggest investigating running maybe Big Sur. I was looking at your specs. Sandy Bridge processor, AMD Radeon 6770 or 6790HD graphics. So, non metal GPU. This can run probably BigSur by using Open Core Legacy Patcher. Big Sur is a little old, but way more secure than High Sierra.
I have been using OCLP for some years, and have had no problems until Sonoma, which is pretty graphics intensive; but it works. Ventura is probably a better option for me, on my lat 2012 27" iMac. I have also upgraded to SSDs, and the Mac is pretty good for being nearly 12 years old.
