Paint colour

Just rebuilding the diffs and it looks as if the casing was originally painted green. Most of the pics I see on these early 1950 80” cars have the diffs painted black. Can anyone confirm the original colour? And also, original colour of the fuel tank???

Should be Black , the chassis should be body colour except the 48's which were Silver.

You should get your self a copy of " ORIGINAL LAND ROVER SERIES 1 " by James Taylor. It is an excellent book with lots of coloured photo's & tells you what colour different components are painted.

Semi-gloss or satin black engine enamel for both. It resists petrol spills better. Same for air cleaners and battery boxes brake backing plates etc.

My 53 80 inch front and rear diffs had traces of Green paint when I cleaned them up.
It had sat at the top of Springbrook Mountain QLD next to a tree, unused for over 40 years.
I had suspected it was original paint.

All the 80s (7?) I've owned over the years have had black axles with various shades of green, red, blue and white over painted or splashed/dripped on them when some one decided to "freshen-up" the paintwork. I have a an 80'" axle stored under some sheet metal with an odd green mould/ fungus/lichen? tinge all over it and a nearby 107 with a similar green growth on the chassis etc. Also, Land Rover used a greenish yellow undercoat/ primer on painted steel chassis and underbody parts. A retired spray painter I knew said he thought it was called "zinc chromate" or something similar. My 1953 80" has a yellowish undercoat showing here and there where the original green top coat has been rubbed or weathered. Perhaps that was what was visible on your chassis? 5380
