Hi,

Can anyone recommend a PTO and winch combo that I have some hope of sourcing in Australia?

Thanks

MR Automotive in Brisbane are now the "owners" of Maxidrive.
They do PTO units, I'm sure they would have winches to suit.

Maxi-Drive Land Rover accessories, Land Rover used parts, Land Rover spare parts suppliers for Brisbane, Queensland and Australia wide (https://www.mrautomotive.com.au/maxidrive.php)

Thanks Tony - I've dropped them a line

The maxidrive unit is hydraulic I believe….

I have a mechanic chain driven PTO winch on my TD5, finding the drive is the tough bit, they do pop up from time to time.

I managed to get the whole assembly which was a good find….

If you happen to find a complete chain drive PTO, some thoughts

I fitted mine to my 300tdi than transferred to my TD5

I’d change PTO drive mounting position from 6 to 9 o’clock, this makes checking t-case level easier and it’s no longer the lowest part of the drive train, just needs one extra hole drill for the locating dowel

You’ll need some modifications to your exhaust, the TD5 has less room, I’d have to pop my head under to refresh my memory, changing to 6 o’clock might help and/or change where the drive shaft bolts to the chassis. Either way it’s tight.

Expect another oil leak, we’ll small one from the out put seal on the drive, again 6 o’clock would help this.

Sheer pin, although carrying one might sound like a good idea, replacing it would be a mission mid recovery, I’d say nearly impossible. I’ve only just sourced a sheer pin after 15 years of not having one. Therefore I always do a 2:1 pull to reduce the chance of overloading the winch, theory has worked to date.

You’ll also need to modify you front bar…….

That’s all I can think off……

Oh this is assuming you a new to PTO’s, if not than ignore all of the above.

Thanks! I am new to PTOs, so this is very helpful.

Isn’t a shaft drive an alternative option to chain?

It would be good to find schematics for the whole assembly - PTO, drive, winch.

Thus far I have just found a bunch of threads on H14s and listings for refurbished units such as Defender PTO | Landrover Winches (https://www.lr-winches.com/Parts/Power_Take_Off_Units/Defender_PTO/)

The PTO drive that bolts to tue back of tue t-case is chain driven, well the one I have is and is the same of others that I’ve actually seen

From the PTO output is two drive shafts, maybe 3, pretty sure it’s just two, these mount to tue lefthand chassis rail

The shafts than connect to the winch.

My winch is a little unique in that I can use the winch with a crank handle I.e. if tue engine isn’t running.

I’ve never owned an electric, absolutely love the PTO winch.

Not sure if you know, but you use gears 1 to 4 for winching tue rope and reverse for winching the rope out. I sometimes engage low range to take load of the winch…….my biggest nightmare is sheering the sheer pin.

If you search Toyota 40 series PTO you’ll more than likely get a full schematic. I think I have the Toyota manual on my hard drive which shows tue whole setup, which is very similar to a landrover.

I’ll have a look on my hard drive when we return to tue car.

Also try ringing the landy wreckers, they may have a PTO assembly for sale.

Winch all day winch……is my little phrase about PTO’s

Awesome! Thanks so much.

The crank option sounds handy.

I will get in touch with wreckers.
