Guys looking at a 2012 May build car and have the VIN and Rego just don't know how to make sure its the 8 speed car update and not the old 6 speed gearbox? Any ideas to confirm please?

Can you get them to send you a pic of the gear stick/console?

Good guess it will be 6 speed.
Any inside pics of the center console area of the vehicle?

If you can get a photo ...

Stick = 6 spd
Knob = 8 spd

When I looked up vindecoderz.com with my L322 VIN, it gave me a full build list for the car.

if its built in 2012 it should be an 8spd.

I am confused because some say if it has the rotary gear shift or paddles it is the 8 speed but a lot of 2012 builds dont have this and are called MY 13 so is it possible that there are some 8 speeds with gearshifters and no paddles?

All 8spd has the rotary dial but not sure if they also had paddle shifters, it just depends on where it was in the build que, some 2011 built My12 in the UK have an 8spd but aussie sold vehicles didnt untill MY13.
As someone said earlier just check the shifter.

Thank you that clears it up

It does give a comprehensive report. Except for my OKA[bigsad] I guess calling it an OKA is comprehensive.

Thanks for that resource, Ron.

A few years ago I flew to Darwin with my ex-BIL to check out a perfect rust-free OKA with a view to him buying it and share driving it back to Sydney.

As you can imagine, it wasn't perfect and rust-free and we flew back to Sydney the next day.

We drove to Oaky to look at a “perfect” Dunny Dore for one of the boys.
Got there and it had scratches and dents here and there,upholstery torn in one area.
I opened the boot and there were two rims in it with tyres worn down to the steel,looked like they had been used for burn outs.

We walked back to our car and drove home.It was a good lesson for the son.
The only reason we went was because he wanted a manual,and there were not many around.

Anyway,back on topic,D4 8 speed was MY13,which came out later in 2012.Same time 2.7 L was dropped and 8 speed low output 3.0L replaced it.
So May 2012 could well be 6 speed or a slight chance a very early 8 speed.

In the UK,I stand corrected,but I think all D4 were 8 speed,and there were no D4 2.7L.

I think they call them unicorns.

My 6sp has paddle shifters too - so don't use this as a measure on the number of gears the car has. The rotary dial, in a Disco, is always an 8 speed. The water gets murkier if you start looking at Range Rovers...
