On Friday, 01-03-24, I drove my car down to a non dealer LR work shop here on the Mornington Peninsula (not Frankston, you victorians I’ll let you guess whom) to have the car test in their workshop, for why it occasionally dropping at the rear and occasional amber light for suspension and also motor lighting up.

The reading seem to indicate a Rr. height sensor ( the one that was damaged in W.A in 21, refer my post back then) malfunction and possible starter motor problem, it seems to be starting ok to me!

I asked for a quote for both repairs, the mechanic, after getting pricing over the phone from his supplier, stated it would be $1500 supplied and fitted for S.Mtr. ( I need too add, I over heard him state to his supplier on the phone, it can be after market not OEM in a whisper- the joys on new hearing aids) and $750-$800 spld @ fitted for Hght. Snsr. To me it appears an extremely expensive quote, but I did make a tentative booking for mid March while I did some more research and any replies from forum members.

i replaced the Rr. Hght Snr. Prior to leaving for W.A. In ‘21 (it was partially damaged again in WA ‘21) at a cost of $400 by LRA in Melbourne.

I’m aware prices have increased since then, but I doubt doubled! Also I contacted Acetune mobile mechanics yesterday (02-03-24) as their website stated the fitted LR starter motors, they quoted $690 supplied and fitted non OEM St.Mtr. on site at home. Also, are after market products of suitable quality.

I get the impression that the mechanic felt that an old 78 y.o. may not be too aware mechanical issues and pricing because of his slight speech issue. Speech does not indicate mental capacity.

My question to the forum is, has any body out there recent had either or both repairs done recently by a mechanic and was their costs with in the $1500 & $800. for individual items or combined.

I need to have a workshop do the work as I suffer with arthritis in both my hands and shoulders, so I’m a captured customer.

Any and all advice would oblige.

Thanks,

JohnZ

Not had either done but sounds excessive, you haven't mentioned if petrol or diesel.

it’s a 4.0lt petrol v6.

will be cancelling with this service centre, possible take it to LRA (Les Richmond Campbellfield ). But will double check pricing, last resort aftermarket with AceTune?

P.S. what’s the general consensus re after market products i.e, starter motor, height sensor etc.

Thanks,

Given I can find an aftermarket starter from a trusted reseller for $500 inc GST retail I'd say it's a little steep. But there'a some $$$ around in that area. But if it ain't broke why fix it?

There's a shop in Braeside, used to have a bad rep but is better under the current management, might be worth getting a quote from him.

thanks Tins, I’ve cancelled the guy here in M.P. today. I’ve hesitant about after market stuff, but will look around for pricing for S.M. (Aft. Mrkt) might double check with Acetune re the supply and fit for $690. What warrant etc. It’s cheaper than $1500 for A.M., even $1000. For OEM from LRA is cheaper than $1500.

Might hold off on the S.M. Until it plays up a bit. The rear height I think is more important as car dropped today. I’ll take it up to Melbourne.
