Good evening all,

I am currently stripping my engine to do a complete rebuild and I want to remove the oil galleries situated just beneath the bottom of the pistons running fore and aft in two bits. When I tried to remove the front brass bung, the whole tube slid backwards. I thought I could then simply drift them from front to back. No, that won’t work. The tubes are solid with gunk. I pushed an endoscope down there and it gets to the md point and stops in the goo.

Has anyone had any succes removing these? How is it done? Should I contemplate cutting and drifting back out in bits?

Any ideas gratefully received.

Eric

The rear tube has a 1/4" x 5/8" fixing stud, and a small locking plate. Have you removed that?

Oil gallery pipes.

As Old Farang stated, the pipes are held in place by 1/4" BSF hex head bolts, one for each. The front pipe is behind the BSP plug with a square socket and the rear one is behind a shallow hex headed plug in the back of the block. Try twisting them from inside the block with padded multigrips or an easy-out (Gently!) The front pipe pulls out the front and the rear one pulls out from the back of the block. You will also need to clean out the oil feed galleries for the rocker spindles (top & bottom), hydraulic chain tensioner cylinder, cylinder one way ball valve, chain idler wheel spindle and tensioner arm oil passages. We use carbie cleaner, small drill bits (fingers only) and heaps of compressed air! You may need to press the chain tensioner sprocket spindle out of the swing arm to clean the passages out. Use a bit of Loctite retaining compound (sparingly) to restore press fit. (620 or 680 etc). Blow excess Loctite out of joint immediately!! A 2000PSI (ish) pressure washer works well on a stripped block! You need to remove the crank and camshafts, bearings etc. to flush the sludge out of the galleries if you haven't done that already. I don't know how these engines survived so long with so much sludge in them! 5380
