Hi
I really need your opinions and assistance. I have a big choice to make.
As it is starting to heat up and the sun is coming out I want to keep things a bit cooler.
I have an opportunity to trial both a Waeco and Engel product. What I really need is some ideas about what I should be looking for to compare. The one thing that I dont have to worry about is price - I can get either fot the same cost.
Or is there another brand I could look at.
I have a photo of both below

So far I have worked out that they are both made in China.

It looks like the writing on the Waeco might be reflective - An important consideration for night use...:D

Pack Equal amount of Ice in both of them. Wack it on your Head for equal length of time at same ambient tempature. 1 week apart from each other.
Whichever you keep on your head the longest out of the two then ditch it. The Other obviously would have a better chill factor.

Actually, whilst you raised this subject, I just bought an Engel 60 Litre Fridge last weekend. It was somewhat damaged, but comes with a full warranty 3 year. A young guy at the shop accidently ran over it and caused superficial damage. I got an Engel Bag, 2 Stubby Holders and a Shop hat (Brim) thrown in thanks to my negotiation skills.
It is hard to compare the Engel and Waeco because of their different features. What I do like about the Engel is the fact that you can have both 12v and 240v Power leads plugged in and it will auto sense the stronger of currents. Ie When I power on 240v through a powered site, I do not need to connect/disconnect anything.
I think the Waeco can do this with an addon accessory.
I went for the 60l because it has reasonable volume and most importantly it has the lower profile, so will fit comfortably in my off-road trailer.
Regardless, in your case, based on your products I would not suggest mixing them with either 12v or 240v - particuarly with ice or water, Unless you really do enjoy getting a kick out of it.

I have the CF40AC 12/24/240 built in and can do the same as you, it also has a dairy section and strong basket and no gap between the wall and the thermomatic plate, which turned me off the Engel, battery protection was the deciding factor though, i'm also liking the Waeco hat too:p ;) but haven't researched it enough to really committ:D

Long haul truckies have sworn by the Engel for over thirty years. They do live in the rough conditions experienced in a high cab-over, with the extreme range of vertical movement, & higher yaw and pitch angles associated with a high COE. They have survived long periods of service in outback road train usage. Both are bloody grossly over-priced when you compare with a domestic refrig./freezer. I use a $49 Chinese cooler from The Warehouse and as long as you put cold stuff in, it keeps it cold. It takes a long time to pull down from ambient temperatures. We put frozen meals in the bottom and chilled stuff on top. It is quite good for 3-4 day trips. We use a $99 Chinese generator when camped, and the County's electrics when travelling. I can't see any problem with this on a long trip so long as you are buying food along the way. It will not freeze, but in a Brisbane summer maintains a temp of 5-10degrees C. And, you can replace it twenty times for the price of an Engel.

I have found that both hats have different adjustment mechanisms. One is velcro and the other is a strap loop combination.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
has any one had any experience with these - I am worried that the velcro may loose its stickeness - but in day to day use it would have the advantage of being quick to adjust to my changing head size.
Starting to think if a "one size fits all" is the way to go https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2006/08/91.jpg

The velcro is the quicker mechanism, and is possibly more weather proof, but my personal preference is for the buckle type. I think it looks better and is less prone to failure.

I know a bloke with a 30yr + engel which has never had a problem. I know another who's had three fridges replaced from Waeco, they seem to just replace them so they don't get a bad reputation.
I have a cooler bag with a VB logo on the side. This is cheap and still keeps the brews cold err coldish enough after a big day anyway.
I'd say get a Sombrero, you can hide a longneck in the top, Do'nt have to worry about sunburn ever.

on a scientific note i would go the waeco hat as it is a lighter color, the darker one (engel) would suck in more heat than the lighter blue one, as for fridges ,just bought a 150 litre ice box brand new off ebay for $150,felt it would be a cheaper camping option rather than buying exxy fridge then setting up all the lecktrickery to run the bloody thing:( tis easier to freeze all precooked meals (make shift ice blocks) plus a few five litre ice blocks down in the bottom plus the 14 sheets of techni ice that came with it,and maybe a few frozen bottles of drinking water, cooler has a 5-16 day ice rating .so kept in a shady spot and not opened to much (read keep kids at bay!!! )should do the trick:)
bro in law has a waeco and seems to have a few probs with it every time we go to fraser, and he has two solar panels on roof and twin battery setup ,so twas just another thing turned me away from lecky fridges
Go the blue hat!!!

Well, the best answer is, if as you say you can get them for the same price (which is very strange) I would go the Engel every time. But if there is a huge price difference between the two makes of similar capacity, I would then consider a Waeco (wasn't that a famous masacre in Texas? ).
I have had my Engel for about 11 years and it has not missed a beat. The thing that worries me about Waecos is they are a polycarbonate manufactuer and may be more prone to damage, but have heard some good reports, some bad. Have not heard any really bad reports about Engels.

Don't Land Rover make a cap too?
Yes they do, but it's a poorly fitting cap - so now I wear a Puma (only because I got it cheap).

Landy hats leak and tend to leave an oil stain wherever you leave them, but saying that they tend to be comfortable and have more character than the cheap and nasty landlooser or pootrol offerings, plus the nice shade of green will help you blend with the surrounding foliage thus becoming one with nature. Obviously this helps to keep things cool.

Baz,
I think you should thank all those who didn't get it. Otherwise your swelled head due to starting such a popular and clever thread would mean you couldn't fit either hat. :p
Personally, I don't hold with this modern technological trickery, I'm sticking to my carbies and the metal clip adjustment. What do you need a hat for - just slide the windows open, open your front and roof vents and enjoy the balmy ambient tempertature.
