Hello Everyone,

Just wondering if anyone else had bought a set of Unimig Welding Goggles Product Code: U21001K?

I bought a set today and I have pressed every combination of button to turn it on - without any success. I am just wondering whether the battery has gone flat. Unless someone knows a magic combination of holding down a particular button - for example to select Grind mode it is a two second press. I have pressed the Mode button and also held down the Mode Button. I held some of the buttons down too for two seconds. Ditto to every other button and nothing happens. There is no obvious On/Off switch and the Operators Manual is not that forthcoming.

Some sources say it is just powered by a battery and other sources say that it is also a solar helmet. I put it out into the sun for hours and also held it next to my old welding helmet while I was welding to bring the new goggles out of 'Sleep Mode" like the manual suggest. Not even a flicker on the monitor that has a visual display of what mode you are in - well also according to the manual it should show stuff.

It looks like I am doing a return trip tomorrow to the shop I bought it from - unless someone can tell me the magic button combination.

Kind regards
Lionel

check the battery compartment, often new auto darkeners have a plastic tab under the battery that has a tang you can use to pull the tab out without opening the battery compartment. Occasionally the tang snaps off leaving the tab in place.

Hello Dave and Tins,

Good suggestion. I have come across those insulating plastic tabs before. None were present on the goggles. I even looked inside the battery compartment and there were no plastic tabs within the battery compartment either. There was a big button battery installed.

Looks like the unit I bought could just have a dud battery.

Well, I know how part of tomorrow will be spent. Going back to the shop where I bought it from. Perhaps they might even know a magic trick - or the battery is flat.

Kind regards
Lionel

The battery is probably worth less than the petrol to get there. Just buy one at woolies or if unusual at Jaycar.

It's gunna be a CR2032. My Unimig helmet is. Get one anywhere.

Did the LED display come on, if not it's the battery (CR2450).

Hello Colin,

Yes, you are correct. It was the battery. I bought one of three on the shelf. The second one did not come on when any of the buttons were pressed. The third one I accidentally touched a button when I was getting it out of the package. The LED display was on when I went to look at it. One each button was pressed different functions came up on the LED.

The Operator's Manual says that there is a 30 minute 'Sleep Mode' that is meant to come on due to inactivity. At a guess I would say that the other two units did not go to sleep during inactivity when they were packaged and they both subsequently went flat.

After the counter jockey tried for over 10 minutes to unsuccessfully pry the battery out I was given an exact exchange for the unit that did work.
