Hi everyone,
It's been a long time since I was on a Forum, but I'm close to finalising a deal on a Discovery 2.
I've always liked the Disco's, with my family having had many Land Rovers over the years.
So, after looking through all the rubbish, I've found this one, which has been very well looked after & basically forced me to hand-shake on a deal as it will be hard to find another like it.
Due to timing, I'll be picking it up in the next week or so, but want to get a RWC inspection on it this week/early next so I know what's needed/is there anything I missed when I took a look around at night [bighmmm]
Vehicle is located in Toowoomba region. Likely needs Tyres, some perished ball joints & has quite a bit of oil & coolant (water pump just replaced) hanging around the bottom of the sump.
Is there anyone of knowledge that knows of a mobile/shop in Toowoomba region that knows old trucks/cars & could give me an honest write up on what's needed?
I expect to spend a few weeks ironing the items out, so don't want on official check that gets entered in the system as I'm sure it will take 2 inspections to get it all done. Or given I'm on the Gold Coast, is it best to get someone local to do the initial & subsequent inspections rather than chopping from one to the other?
All this RWC stuff is new to me having moved from NZ where I had my preferred mechanic sort all my vehicles needs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Awesome to see these forums are still alive & these knowledge sharing platforms haven't been lost.
Regards,
T

Try Rad Rover, not sure if he does RWCs.

The V8 is nice to drive and although the TD5 sounds pretty good, the V8 is better!
The V8 auto is better with its larger TC and less flaring, but the TD5 auto can be modded to improve such.
The torque with the TD5 coming lower in the range with the V8 about 10% higher, but comes higher in the range.
The TD5 is especially tunable, the D2a better, for moderate cost and generally the TD5 is long lasting and reliable, minor annoyances apart.
Used market prices generally reflect the fact the TD5 as the better choice, but, more expensive to buy. The saving on purchase price goes a long way to covering the cost of fuel for a lot of K's.
So missing, both are great vehicles with unique issues, ummm, not sure!!!
Ball joints are the bane of the D2, some have done them easily, others suffered!

Just some casual observations of D2 TD5 posts over the years..................
10 + years ago the TD5s were the problem donks (and childs) in the LR world............ hence the plethora of stickies in this section.
There is now a bunch of caring sharing crew who work on these things and share info on everything about them ................... everything.
All the weird alien stuff in the stickies is pretty much sorted and you can enjoy a very good rebuildable engine (TD5) in the next best simple thing to a RRC chassis if you go for coil sprung.
Personally, I view the air / coil thing as a non issue when the cost benefits are weighed up but each to their own.
cheers, DL

Ahmm…. In my case 400nm at 10.5 L / 100 km so 800km of touring range, no oil consumption and well in excess of 500k km engine life!

Yes, and it's the ready, generous advice of people like SF and Shack that make these things attractive for someone like me.
