About 18km south of Echuca, the car suddenly developed a bad vibration and noise. The learner driver asked me what the noise was. We pulled over. There was smoke coming from the front prop shaft's, front uni joint. So I removed the front prop shaft, locked the centre diff and drove off. The noise, the grinding noise came and went. With at times a strong resistance to moving, like the wheels have chocks on them or the LT230 has died, or the R380 has died. You know, that noise. I have RACV total care, so the car was taken back home.
The joys of motoring as my dad would say.

I wonder if there is any oil in the front diff?

The front diff was cold, the uni joint was hot, very hot.
Interesting point. I'll check the level

Mine did something similar a month or so ago. It was the pinion bearing. Oil level had dropped a little, due to an axle seal fail. Flange and uni were too hot to touch.

Is the noise there only on over run?

When the car got back home, I drove it a short distance to park it up. Something was grabbing, a wheel or wheels on the road. I think it is the front diff. I am back home on Wednesday, I’ll check the front diff then.
The bolt that holds the flange to the diff was loose. Another buggered diff indicator.

Indeed. When I drained mine to pull it I got some tapered rollers included in the oil.

Are the front and rear diffs interchangeable?

Are the front and rear diffs interchangeable?

Pretty sure that's a yes. Both Rover diffs, with the same ratio ( der ) and splines...

If you still have the rubber doughnut you would have to swap the pinion flange, then they will swap

I don't have the doughnut, but my ashcroft crown wheel and pinions are front and rear handed.

If I swapped mine they would both be driving off the over run side.
