Reading about maps and directions on another thread reminded me of this. On long trips we always carried 2 spares. One on the bonnet, or one or both in the back,depending on the terrain and/or destination. (When you have to change a tyre in the mud and rain you soon learn where to carry your spares). Sometimes we just carried an old tyre with 33m of capstan winch rope coiled up inside. Before we set out in the morning I used to draw the route and distance on the cover.
