No spark

howdy folks,

Can someone help me with this please.

1957 series 1.

New coil = Fuelmiser c80, with external resistor.

with ignition on I have 12v out of the fuse box into the resistor and then 7 volts out of the resistor into the negative terminal of the coil, but only 0.8 volts out of the positive of the coil to the distributor.

does that mean the coil is munted? Or have I messed up the connections? I’m not seeing any spark at the points.

continuity on the wires all seems ok.

1. Series 1 Landrovers do not have a resistor in series with the coil, but note that this will not cause no spark, and the coil is different if you have or do not have a resistor.

2. With ignition on, and the points open, you should have 12v at both terminals of the coil, and with the points closed, the distributor side of the coil should be 0v. 0.8v indicates excessive resistance somewhere, either a connection, or the points themselves, or possibly the internal wire in the distributor earthing the breaker plate is broken, and earth is relying on uncertain contact.

If the voltages reported remain the same with points open or closed, there is a short between the coil side of the points and earth, possibly internal to the capacitor.

If you are using a 12v coil with a resistor, spark will be weak, but should be there if everything else is OK, if it is an 8v coil, spark would be OK, but higher coil current may result in shorter contact life.

If you have negative earth, the negative terminal of the coilshould go to the distributor, but it is unlikely to affect operation.

The C80 coil is for use without resistor.
C80R is for use with resistor.

Here is an extract regarding ignition coils and correct wiring also if your condenser is working correctly you won’t see spark at point. The condenser is fitted to stop points from arcing, increasing the working life of the points.

I hope that by now, you have found your missing sparks. Curiosity has got to me. What caused the fault? A break down of the nylon witches hat insulatior between the points termial nut and the points spring is a very common fault. Please let us know.
