Step 1, I've taken her to pieces.....

Before I start putting the old lady back together I'm trying to find out as much as possible about her original build.
And I know I'm one of many who have asked, but can anyone help with old records?

Shipped from the UK in Jan 1956 to Sydney Pressed Metals.
CKD Batch No. 124
Chassis No. 177600748
Engine No. 151904088 - A Series 2 replacement I think
Gearbox No. 170612126
Front Axle No. 270605419 - A LWB one?
Rear Axle No. 170608458

Not sure which distributor she went to, or of the intervening years before she ended up on a farm in Lake Bolac, Vic in the late 1960s.

Appreciate your time and help.
Cheers
Adam

Adam,
I'm just about to start chasing the history of a recently acquired 1956, 86" Land Rover. The chassis is in the same RHD Export CKD sequence as yours, but about 500 units earlier (244) than yours (748). Interestingly, it has a green chassis. Does yours? Anyway I'll let you know what I can find out. I believe that these were the first vehicles to the have the final version of the speadbore engines with the 7/8" piston pins and connecting rods to suit.
The 86" had 3 variants of the 2.0l engine in their relatively short model run of 3 years.

Cheers,
Mike (5380)

I am also interested in sourcing the history of my 1955 (according to workshop manual numbering information) 86".

Car no. 177601149

Engine no. 170612409

Cheers, JL.

Hi Mike,
Yes, green chassis originally, painted black early on I'd guess as there were only a few points that were still green, the fire wall to chassis bracing brackets on both sides.
And the same, I'll let you know if I learn anything further.
Cheers

1954 86" chassis was body coloured, so 1956 might have been as well.
I think the black chassis was way later, like series 2.

I believe that locally built CKD models pretty well did what they liked with chassis paint colours, so they didn't conform to the same colour change change over dates as the Solihull built vehicles. So that means a fully assembled vehicle imported into WA would have the latest colour changes, but a NSW, VIC or QLD assembled unit would have a whatever colour chassis they wanted. Why not the same colour as the body panels? I have only seen black chassis on 1957 and later CKD models.
Interesting! 5380

My 54 build series 1 86 that I owned many years ago had a black chassis - original.

The two mid 56 build series 1s 88s that I currently have and they have original black chassis.

However I have seen variants of particularly the earlier 86s that have had green chassis.

Adam,

I just found out that my recently acquired RHD CKD (1776) 86" (244) was a Grenville Motors import sold new by Harold Kensell Motors in Tamworth on 09/04/56 and spent the next 68 years at Orange Grove near Gunnedah. It is odd that Land Rover listed these 1776 chassis 86s as 1955 models, even though many were built well after the normal August model year change over date. I think it may have something to do with the planned 1956 release of the new 86/109 models and a slow down of sales at the time. It would be interesting to find out! Mike.
