Major oil leak in remote area.

Hi all,

I've got a major oil leak coming from underneath the crank pulley, it nearly looks like it's coming from a bolt hole that's there. At first I thought ah awesome I just need a bolt but the hole isn't threaded...I'm now guessing it's the harmonic balancer/crank pulley seal. Really hard to tell where it's coming from back there. If anyone has any ideas?

My only option out of here is to flat tow it 20Km, so I've dropped the rear tail shaft at the diff, but the front one looks like a mission to drop so hoping at least the rear prevents some damage in the transmission. Is there a way I can disengage the rear at the transfer case? So it doesn't spin..

It's a long way from home, after the 20Km I need to winch onto a barge(it's on an island) and then pull it off on the beach and tilt tray it from there.

The crankshaft seal can work its way out. I use retaining liquid.
A new crankshaft bolt will be required as it is torqued to yield.

At least the crankshaft should be locked and ideally the camshafts too, but perhaps the bolt can be loosened before the camshaft belt is removed then the cam belt refitted before starting to tighten the new bolt. However as the bolt is very tight and torqued to specs, the crankshaft will have to be locked with an appropriate tool.

I think the op is asking about options for towing, not to repair the crank seal.

My tip would be to disconnect thr front propshaft at the flange. the splined part should just pull out of the transfer case. If not, split it at the flange and use a leather belt and a dollop of grease (or oil) or other wide strap to support the shaft (mulitple zip ties?) If the prop shaft can't be pulled out easily.

Ended up towing it to the barge with tailshafts in as you can do that 50Km at slow speeds. Then lined it up with the barge and winched it on. Runva runs without alternator as long as you charge the battery up.

From there it was still an 80Km corrugated section. If you ever need towing off road WA 4x4 Recovery will come get you from anywhere and RAC will cover the road charge.

I guess you already knew that Whyatts in Geraldton are a very much well regarded LR repairer - and I speak from very happy personal experience - (apart from also being an RAC recoverer!).

Ah damn, I didn't realise they have a 4x4 tow truck too. If it weren't the end of our trip anyway, that would have definitely been our best option. Due to work committments though our best option was to find someone to take us back to Perth, only cut the trip short by 2 days. Next time I know who to try.

Was holidaying there, what a spot. I'll be back for a third time for sure.

DHI and Steep Point world corrugations champion! Not an easy place to get out of. Trip between False Entrance and Steep Point along the coast one of the greatest west coast off-road trips.

Yep was DHI, my favourite spot to camp now. Was there 2 years ago and the road in was much worse. They're grading it at the moment, only the last 30km was rough. The island itself has some brutal roads though. Great fun.
