Looking at an upgrade to D4, wondering if it is possible or not to fiddle the odometer on these. Will changing the ECU or BCU change Odo readings?
Reason I'm asking is, if I find a vehicle with low kms but seems to be .....umm...... well worn, then should I be suspicious.
Are there areas of this model that wear excessively in short periods. I know to look at seat cushions and door trims and the like.
Odometer readings, are they reliable?

Odometer readings, are they reliable? No they are not, some have been fiddled with, I've seen it.
On a D4, common wear points are the trim on the top of the drivers door, the edge of the leather on the drivers seat that you slide over when getting in, the AC control knobs.
None of these seem to wear/deteriorate as badly on a D3.
I think you can read the actual km with many OBD2 readers, as a number of control units in the vehicle store mileage.

Heard a number of folk say that they wouldn't look at a D3/4 without something like a GAP with them.

Yes checking faults which link to kilometres a must if you have doubt but a service history of receipts should give clues and if no service history forget it.

The ODO is definitely stored in both the BCM and the Dash. I'm unsure if it's also in the ABS. I've been doing a lot of reading lately with the hope of changing my dash from Miles to KM and there are plenty of references for reprogramming both the BCM and Dash to wind back the k's, so it's difficult but not at all impossible.

I've got a Nanocom that I would take with me to check for any faults. Don't know that it can show Kms, I'll have another look at it.

Ask the seller if they have a Gap tool that they would let you use.
Gap is locked in to a VIN. If you purchase, negotiate the Gap and get the passwords.
