Hi all,
I have a lady friend (whom I like) that independently of me is wanting a RRS.
She has recently sold her 5.7L Ram and would like to cart around 2 horses.
From my research here I have come to the conclusion that any of the TDV6's can blow up even if well maintained. Yes, I know not nearly all, but too often for my liking.
There is a local RRS 5L petrol with 128k.
My question are;
Is the 5L reliable at fit for her purposes (carting horses).
Is there any problems or repairs that should be completed to look out for?
Also the service history was good until 45K then generic service at much too long intervals - see table
191566
Is this service history a deal breaker?
And bonus question: Anyone who knows RR's in the Armidale region willing to inspect for payment of some variety?

Ive been looking into the SCV6 Disco, which is a modification of the V8 (2 cylinders blanked off and a split crank and a supercharger)
I think with the earlier 5L the timing chain guides had issues that need them upgrading.
Im sure you will find much info around about this engine searching, as this sub-forum is pretty quite. I think this is the one

Ive found the Disco's with it are crazy priced at the moment, like $40k+ , twice the price of the TDV6's, but its considered pretty simple type of engine with great power.
Have you considered the TDV8 ? Thats what I have and it got all the benefits of V8 but diesel economy and torque. You can get them for around 20-25k too currently.

That's an awfully long last service interval that could have caused sludge to accumulate. Check inside the oil filler cap for cleanliness or otherwise. There have been instances of TDV8's being basically totally clogged with sludge, presumably due to lack of servicing but diesels probably worse than petrol for sludge.
With that disregard for servicing I would keep searching.

Ive been looking into the SCV6 Disco
JLR only ever sold a handful of D4 SCV6s in Australia, like 5 or 6 a year. I've been watching for them but the ones that do come up are all very high KMs or in pretty poor condition.
They were the standard engine in the US so there's quite a lot of info on them on US LR websites.
which is a modification of the V8 (2 cylinders blanked off and a split crank and a supercharger)
So, the SCV6 is the length of a V8 but has two cylinders not working? Sounds like an odd arrangement.

yes blanked off, same block. just different head and crank plus charger. ive been watching the few that come up for sale too, but since i worked out its a v6 split crank and if read and heard of a few snapped cranks, i dont think its as tough as the v8 which people say is 'identical' and proven.
The engine doesnt have a dip stick, electronic sensor that apparently is not very sensitive, and possibly its lack of oil without realising that could contribute to some of the snaps, but i also just think a v6 split can never be as strong as a similar sized v8

im still interested in one potentially but worried about the available payload on the rear axle for towing, as it seems that engine is most common with the S and HS line, with the HS having 3 sunroofs and rear AC, and would only buy one after putting it over a weigh bridge first
