View Full Version : How have people found the SSB SS88Ti battery performs over the long term?

This is not a name and shame post as the people who sell the SSB batteries have been brilliant, but rather a long term use review of a product now that people have been running for a while.

So is there still strong support for using the SS88Ti in the D3/D4s?

I have had 2 now in the D3, and I am finding after about 2-3 years of use the battery volts regularly drop below 10v when cranking if it hasn’t been on charge.

My set up had a 80w solar panel which is now upgraded to 110w, and a Victron MPPT charge controller which charges every day and is meant to be good for battery health. It is rare it won’t do a full charge cycle including at least 1 hr of absorption and 6-8 hours of float charging, yet when cranking before the next charge cycle starts it dips down to 9.5v even after being on charge the day before.

A battery test shows the CCA is good. I have not done a capacity test.

It is very possible I have another yet undiagnosed issue causing excessive parasitic drain, but unless I can find something unusual happening I will probably go back to either the Varta G14 or Bosch SM 60038 which seem to last 5-6 years before any issues.

Mine was rubbish after two years. I read the battery which said two year warranty and bought a Varta again. Subsequently as Tombie suggested there was another year warranty for retail use. I don’t bother claiming it at the point having already replaced it.

Price point was good but longevity wasn’t. I still have a 70 as my second.

I only used the one. I have also used a 50 and a 70 as the auxiliary.

The SS88Ti barely lasted the 2 years. While I could possibly have charged it more often, my feeling is that all three of the SSB did not like the constant heat up here which led to a drop off once the second anniversary approached. Have changed over to a Supercharge as they have a store with a door here.

I transferred my first one when it started to deteriorate to my BMW320d which is mounted in the boot. Seems to be hanging in - the BMW does a better job of killing all parasitic draw when parked up but still needs to be charged up if left unused for a few weeks. It is down about 20% on CCA which is still enough for the 2.0L diesel.

I monitor the temperature of the battery in the D3 - can see between 60-70degC but yet to test on a very hot day.

I also have the 50 - this seems to be going ok and typically sees about 10degC less than the crank battery. Gets some benefit being on the opposite side to the turbo. When I isolate It from the crank battery it holds 12.9v over many days of no use.
