BMW wheels on D3/4 - wheel nut specifications to suit

I'm well aware that the Gorilla 68148 wheel nuts < E-T Closed Lug Nut - 13/16" Hex - 14mm x 1.50 Thread Size - Chrome Finish - Bulk (68148) | Gorilla Automotive (https://www.gorilla-auto.com/gorilla-automotive-000000000000068148'srsltid=AfmBOorszCTcqUcVu_BABu_ LtYzzOsHDrvgee8wWLourhOAFkzHz7NKX) > have historically been the go-to solution when fitting BMW wheels onto the D3/4 but they're challenging to come by as no Australian Gorilla dealers stock them, limited availability in the USA and scary freight prices.

What is it about these nuts that makes them suitable? Is it just the 0.30" of extra thread (ET/E-T) that the shank gives that is required to ensuring there is enough thread on the wheel studs?

I ask as it looks like there are some potential local options, including:

Dimensions look very similar to the Gorillas but overall longer length and slightly longer shank (0.01").

Could these be locally available better priced options?

0.3" is 7.6mm. What you're looking for is at least 14mm of thread engagement and 7.6mm is over half the requirement so will make a significant difference to the legality of the nuts.

Edit: ensure that the shank isn't so long that the nut tightens on the hub rather than on the rim.

I would hope that the extra 0.254mm of shank length on the Lugnut King nuts, when compared to the known compatible Gorilla nuts, wouldn't be too much to cause the shank to tighten on the hub. Easy enough to check on the wheels themselves though.

Just last week I threw out a full set of the specific nuts for use on BMW wheels

The Gorilla brand nuts are actually hard to source now. Even most of the US website sellers are out of stock.

I don't know why you would bother, get some factory 17's or 18's if its a 2.7 D3/4.

I have factory 18" wheels and would prefer 17" wheels instead.
The BMW X5 17" are a better offset than the factory LR 17" wheels, whilst being sufficiently load rated for this purpose. Also they were easy to find, cheap to purchase, and are here ready for tyres and nuts to fit.
