How?

My guess is that they got sideways, probably due to wind, and the downwind gear collapsed (confirmed by a video just seen), the wingtip touched the ground, and then the wing failed close to the fuselage, and the forward momentum was absorbed by completing the half roll and the energy to break off the wing and tail, and probably by the other wing being flat on to the direction of travel during the roll and acting as an airbrake. It is not clear whether it rolled only a half turn or one and a half, nor whether both wings are missing.

I wonder if those injured were not wearing seatbelts, or had them too loose, or were struck by cabin baggage.

One of the fatality injured passengers was struck by a cabin trolly.

Seems to have landed very hard collapsing the landing gear. Looks like an instrument landing failure.

My “how “ question was about how anyone survived it, not how it occurred. So many things had to happen, like the fire appearing to only be in the wing that broke off. Rather like the Swiss cheese model working positively. If you want to believe in miracles then there one was.

Both wings came off on the landing releasing all the fuel while it was still moving fast. They are designed to do that so it is not just by luck.

It is crazy there were no deaths with the rollover.

Hi
Many internal projectiles, including a drink trolley.
Cheers

Hard to be certain but it didn't look like the left wing detached at all, unless it was obscured by the smoke. It appeared to rollover with the fuse.

The whole thing was crazy, when you remember how those Korean pilots did everything they could to get their thing on the runway, only to be killed by terrible airport design.

Juan makes a very good and valid point re disinformation ( the real type ) at the end of this video.

It has been mentioned here that there were "fatalities". There were not. All 80 people on board survived.*

* All 21 injured in Delta plane crash released from hospital (https://www.wdsu.com/article/delta-flight-toronto-airport-crash-latest/63852818)

How did every passenger walk out of a fiery Delta plane crash in Toronto? - ABC News (https://abcnews.go.com/US/passenger-walk-fiery-delta-plane-crash-toronto/story?id=119026739)

The internet is a great resource, used properly. It is also a dangerous place to source "news" from. Sadly our terrible TV and print media do this all the time. People are now lining up to sue Delta. I believe that Delta has a case to pursue suing the "News" media.

I saw an aerial view of the wreckage today (also in the video above). The left wing is still attached, albeit a bit the worse for wear.

Yes. Saw that. Juan mentions it also. I'm still a little stunned. This has echoes of the "Sully" incident. Obviously I don't mean how the pilots saved the day ( they didn't get the chance ) but the incredible survival of what was a major airliner accident.

It is testament to the designed strength of the airframe, for sure. But so often that alone isn't enough.
