View Full Version : Front t/case output shaft backlash

Hi all,

I've been diagnosing a noise coming from the front of my 95 110 (symptoms in previous post), and when checking the front UJs I noticed that while the UJs were fine, there was what seemed like a lot of backlash on the t/case ouput shaft. I can hear that the backlash is inside the t/case, and amounts to probably 5 or so degrees at a guess, which seems like a lot to me - the t/case was rebuilt around 10k kms ago so I shouldn't think there'd be much internal wear. Any thoughts appreciated.

Centre diff is a common source of tc slack.

As POD says - a major contributor is likely to be the centre diff - a small amount of wear on the thrust washers translates to a lot more free play on the shaft, simply because there are four of them. And I would not regard 5° as excessive.

Yeah awesome, thanks guys, helpful respones. I suppose they're a pretty sloppy drivetrain at the best of times - glad to know that amount of backlash isn't excessive, and hopefully t/case wear is minimal or as expected 10k kms after a rebuild.

There are a lot of joins in the drive train that have to have some slight free play as they have to allow for parts to move freely, and it all adds up.
