View Full Version : Gear Shift Module failure

Hi All,

My Disco 4 recently had issues with the rotary gear selector occaisionally getting stuck in drive/reverse/park. After turning the car on and off a few times, it usually resolved itself, until now.

I (foolishly?) ordered a Gear Shift Module testing device from LR Parts in the UK, which comes with two replacement GSM Lifting Gear Levers, as I read that the thread commonly fails and this 'simple' fix saves replacing the whole module. Well, it worked for a week and then it failed again. I do not think that I am up to the task of fixing the solenoid which could be one of the issues. Therefore, I am trying to see what other options there are other than taking it to the LR Service centre.

Is it possible to order a new GSM and swap it out? Or does it need to be callibrated to the new car etc? Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Chris

My personal thought is, if you’re planning on keeping the car for a long time I’d replace the module. Mine is a [emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]]][emoji[emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]]]][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]][emoji[emoji638][emoji639][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]]]] and that’s probs how I’d go if mine went

Sorry. Don’t know what’s happened to that message. I’ve tried fixing it. You get the idea

I'd agree with changing the module.
I have a 2016 D4 which had a Gear Shift module that kept failing.

It's easy to change. Takes less than half an hour. There are quite a few you YT videos showing how to do it. Only tool you need is a small Torx screw driver.

I ordered a genuine one from the UK. Was the cheapest option I could find. Took about a week. All up around $850 dollars.

Thanks Dave. Just to confirm- the replacement module doesnt need to be programmed at all and you can just plug it in and off you go?
