Hi all I have a leaking Welsh plug at the rear of the head on my td5 my question is do you need to remove the head to fix it or can the motor be tilted back by removing the gearbox mounts the box is a manual or is there another way.
Thanks Phillip

I think it can be done in situ. You may have to undo one/two engine mounts. Biggest issue I can see is knocking the new one in square and tight. But I'd wait for Dazza or someone to chip in.

Ive done it in situe in the defender, getting the old one out is harder than prepping up to get a new one in. Getting it square is easy if you use just the right pattern of taps going round in a circle with the small tapometer, of course starting it can be a little frustrating.

I think It could be swung in situe for a discovery but you're going to learn/invent some new swear word combos depending on if you pay someone or DIY.

All that said, if the rear core plug has gone, you might want to consider a cooling system overhaul.

Good point. if one is gone then the rest won’t be far behind.

It’s a Welch plug, not a welsh plug.

From Wikipedia:

The Welch plug was originally designed in the 1900s at the Welch Motor Car Company in the United States. Prior to the invention of the Welch plug, the core holes were sealed using pipe plugs. During the testing of a car, one of the pipe plugs backed out. In order to get back on the road, one of the Welch brothers installed a press-fit quarter or half dollar coin into the hole using a hammer. The design of the Welch plug was refined based on this principle of a press-fit metallic disc.

Dunno, Ron. Maybe his is made in Llanfairpwllgwyngyll, or Pan-ty-gyrdl perhaps.

For now, the difference between its just a weep and its a catastrophic head wrecking emotionally damaging wallet draining sudden loss of all the coolant can be measured in seconds in some cases.

You do have a low coolant alarm or at least a head temp monitor right?.....

Because the factory gauge is oh so helpful…
