Disco 3 2006, Handbrake issue

Replaced rear hand brake drums, hard but all good. discovered broken left handbrake cable, had a mechanic put in new handbrake unit but car doesn't recognize it and won't start! Is it possible to get the car to recognize new handbrake unit? And how?
Unit is new but on the cheaper side. Is it a problematic cheaper problem or do they all need specialist re-calibrating?
