View Full Version : Possible Transmission Whirring in 4th & 6th

Hi Everyone,
I have recently noticed an audible 'wurring' noise which seems to come from the transmission in 4th & 6th gear, only under load. Much more pronounced in 6th gear (higher pitch, and louder). Defender is 2015 Puma 2.2.
Had a chat to my favourite landy mechanics at Roving Mechanical (Pete and Glen) who are always great but were unsure of what could be causing it in only those gears. Suggested changing out the transmission oil to see if there's anything going on.
Looking for advice or possible causes if you've dealt with similar issues yourself.
Appreciate any feedback. Thank you in advance!

as someone that has rebuilt my MT82 already at 130,000kms and at 210,000kms, its about to be rebuilt again. The rear case support bearing takes a flogging if you lug in 6th and worse if heavy and lug in 6th. My box sounds like an angry bearing that it's degree of anger and noise follows the rpm and vehicle speed. ie no noise in first but in 6th sounds like it wants to explode. When the noise became too evident to ignore it, the box oil was pristine when i drained it, so that is not a reliable indicator of a problem or no problem. The other weakness is the 3rd gear syncro. They are spot welded and can break the weld resulting in losing 3rd (ask me how i know). sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but budget for a box rebuild or replacement (if you can find them new). There was a long period that Ashcroft did not have them. Not sure about current stocks. If the box needs to come apart, spend the money on an upgraded fully welded third gear to avoid that weakness coming home to roost in the future.

6th gear tends to be the noisiest but if you can obviously hear it, its rebuild time.
Ideally find a rebuilder that knows the ford mt82 gearbox well is a great start.
In W.A all my gearboxes go to Perth Car Transmission Specialists | Service, Repair & Rebuild | The Car Transmission Experts (https://www.autotransrus.com.au/)
I remove the mt82 gearbox and lt230 transfer case as one complete assembly, separate them and i run both up on the bench, this will clearly show what box is the trouble and what gears.
Its such a reasonably common failure I do them as an exchange so I always have 2 in stock ready to use.

ps Joe from Wollongong Automatics knows his way around the MT82. If you send your work to him, be patient. He is good, just painfully slow. A consequence of being probably one of the best in the metro Sydney area. If you can drop the box from your car and take only the box to him, you will probably find yourself up the order. Getting onto a hoist and tying up the hoist until its fixed seems to be the biggest hurdle.
