Yes folks my first post in a while and here in the D3 section - who would have thunk it!

My Son has recently stepped into LR ownership as he wanted a budget camping setup and doesn't need to daily something so a D3 sort of fit the bill. He has picked up an 06 Petrol V6 for around $10K with RWC and rego.

Drives great but I wanted to tell a story that happened recently. The vehicle in question was serviced just over a year ago and has done around 5,000KM over that time. My Son has only had it a short time and turning off the freeway the other day as he backed off the throttle the oil pressure light came on - he did the right thing and pulled over straight away and shut the engine off - smoke everywhere and a pool of oil rapidly spreading under the vehicle. Zero oil on the dipstick.

Stuck it on a truck and bought it back to work. Up on the hoist and off with the bottom bash plate to see what's what - based on some googling I was expecting a front main seal or oil hose but the front of the engine was clean but when I prodded around on the hoses I bumped the oil filter - and it was loose - like, really loose - a full turn back from sealing.

So, i spun it up thinking that this was all the issue was and went to tighten it by hand - and click - it went loose again. Pulled it off and checked the number - it was a K&N HP-1004. Specs show the thread is M20 x 1.5mm. Hmmm, another quick google and the thread on the engine is 3/4 1/16.... See where this is going?

So the M20 spins on no dramas and has held for ages, but eventually gave up. New Ryco Z63 and oil and she's running again smooth and with no other apparent issues - not sure if the engine life has been reduced, but will cross that bridge if/when it happens - Second hand engines aren't that expensive so maybe I'll find one anyway at some stage and whack a new timing chain in it etc for a rainy day.

I chatted with the person that sold him the car - there are no hard feelings here by the way - he told me the filter number came up from the rego when he did the service so never imagined there was an issue, so just a short story here to be aware that I think at least one filter database has had someone cross reference these filters at some stage incorrectly.

Could have been much worse but at least for the time being, it's back on the road.

Wow, great Jorb!

You would not think that would be possible in 2025. What does the K&N site say for compatibility?

Everything is fine. Nothing is broken?

Who in their right mind would use a k&N oil filter. Have the rice boys infiltrated the Land Rover clique?

Sorry for the late reply - the K&N website shows this filter is used on 100's of cars going back 25 plus years - all Japanese & Korean which makes sense given it has a metric thread. - K&N HP-1004 Oil Filter (https://www.knfilters.com/hp-1004-oil-filter)

There doesn't appear to be any issues with the vehicle now - it's back on the road and after a good road test to burn all the oil off the exhaust, you wouldn't know anything had happened. We have been discussing finding another engine and rebuilding it or at least putting a set of timing chains in it - which looks to be a horrendous job but also one of the main failure points on these engines. Not sure if its brief run with low oil pressure has reduced the lifespan of the engine - it has 225KKM on it. While not as common as they once were there does still seem to be plenty of engines and parts around for them and geez it goes great and sounds awesome when you stick the boot in. [bigrolf]

We will be doing a trans service as well as transfer case and diff oil changes shorty - the vehicle overall is in fantastic condition mechanically and also straight and clean.

Other item I did while it was at work were the front door locks - both had died. Once you do one, they aren't actually that bad - I think I could do one in under an hour start to finish now. [smilebigeye]

Actually nothing wrong with K&N products if used in the correct application, air filters i would only use on a dirt bike where you should clean and re-oil after each use and their oil filters are no different than anything else.
