I'm after a good tool to spin various size wire brushes for surface rust removal/surface prep work.
Needs a nice fast spin to do the job well.
Any recommendations?
I have some Makita batteries. Would a Makita Impact drill do the job?
My Ozito impact drill definitely wont but a friend's Milwalke was pretty good.

You really want to use an angle grinder - and a cordless one won't cut it for proper removal.

jasco twisted s/s discs for the heavier work, and for the impossible corners a normal cordless drill and a crap-tonne of pressure to get into the impossible is what's required.

of course, goes without saying that you should use every non-mechanical advantage at your disposal to reduce the amount of physical strain, so some CRC evaporust spray (clings like paint stripper) for the bits you cant remove and soak, will relieve a lot of strain on the arms and lungs.

from experience the battery operated angle grinders cycle through batteries like a rabbit on a rampage, so the cordless ideology is not appropriate for this kind of work., save your self effort and time and use a corded 4/5" grinder of at least 750w.

For smaller areas that are harder to reach into, less robust parts or if Im working over head I use an impact driver with the wire wheels.

If Im pulling rust off flat steel I use a cup brush in a grinder to get the really scaley stuff off but if its just surface rust I've had good sucess with flap wheels. corded grinder for big open runs, cordlcess when it needs a little finesse.

good luck

We use the 18V Milwaukee angle grinders at work. With the 5Ah,or the newer 6Ah battery they last a lot longer than older cordless angle grinders.

If you go the angle grinder route (probably the only alternative). Buy a $20 aldi grinder for all it matters, but spend big and buy a good quality wire brush (even with good quality brushes I've plucked wires from my arms and legs that have embedded quite deeply). Have you tried one of those drum type stripping machines? I'm yet to try one myself :)
